SFUSD Reaches Memorandum of Understanding With Common Crafts

San Francisco (December 3, 2023) - The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) announced Sunday night that it has reached a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Glaziers, Architectural Metal and Glass Workers Union, Local 718; Iron Workers Union, Local 377; United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers, Local 40; Sheet Metal Workers International Union, Local 104; United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of the United States and Canada, Local 38; Carpenters 46 Northern California Counties Conference Board on behalf of Northern California Carpenters Regional Council and its affiliated Local Unions, Carpenters Local 22; Auto, Marine and Specialty Painteor, Local 116; International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Local 853; Laborer’s International Union of North America (LIUNA), Local 261 and Machinists, Local 1414, also known as “Common Crafts”.

SFUSD and Common Crafts agreed to negotiate in good faith to address outstanding grievances, arbitrations, memorandums of understanding, and other contract negotiation-related issues. The MOU outlines terms for SFUSD and Common Crafts to:

  • Hold in abeyance all pending grievances, and arbitrations while the parties meet and negotiate salary and resolutions to outstanding pay issues. 
  • Convene a task force of equal members no later than Dec. 15, 2023 to jointly conduct data collection, establish a timeline for resolution, and seek to complete negotiations by Feb. 1, 2024.
  • Establish an offset stipend for future settlement agreement: SFUSD will pay Common Crafts unit members a one-time, off-schedule $3,000 stipend by Dec. 8, 2023.

As part of the MOU, Common Crafts also expressly agrees not to engage in any concerted activity, any work stoppage, sick out, or strike of any kind, including sympathy strikes, through Feb. 1, 2024. Common Crafts represents approximately 65 employees in SFUSD including Carpenters, Sheet Metal Workers, Glaziers, Roofers, and more. All SFUSD schools and offices will be open and in operation tomorrow, Dec. 4, 2023.
