K-2 Reading Screener

NEW K-2 Early Reading Screening for 2025-26 Link to this section

Beginning in 2025–2026, students in kindergarten, grade one, and grade two must be screened (using a state approved assessment) for risk of reading difficulties per Education Code Section 53008.

The California Department of Education has shared a list of 3 reading screeners approved by the Reading Difficulties Risk Screener Selection Panel:

  1. Multitudes
  2. DIBELS
  3. Amira

One of the 3 CDE approved assessments above will replace the Star CBMs as SFUSDs Early Reading Screener in 2025-26.  

NOTE: The Star Early Literacy, Reading and Math assessments will remain in place as Interim assessments.

All K-2 Educators and school leaders were encouraged to attend a K-2 Reading Screener Review Session on Wednesday, March 12 from 3:30-5pm. If you were unable to make it to the session on March 12th, you can access the presentation deck and recording below:

A Reading Screening is used to :

  • Identify students who may be at risk of reading difficulties, including dyslexia.
  • Implement a school’s comprehensive instructional strategy.
  • Provide information for parents and educators to discuss student needs in a more informed way.
  • Inform supports and services for students with reading difficulties
