Family Guide for English Learners with IEPs

 

  1. If you need interpretation during meetings or translation of documents, please inform your student’s case manager or indicate on the notice of meeting form.
  2. IEP meetings for English Learners should include a discussion of how the student is making progress towards becoming English proficient (reclassification).

    A. IEP team should analyze English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) or alternate assessment scores over the past 3 years.

    B. IEP team should review the student’s curriculum performance and progress and discuss whether the student should be recommended for reclassification.

    C. Parent/guardian should be given the opportunity to learn about reclassification and express their opinions about their child’s progress towards reclassification.

    D. Based on available assessments during the last 12 months, the IEP team should discuss whether the student has demonstrated appropriate basic skills in English. The team should also discuss whether the student's scores are comparable to English proficient or reclassified peers with similar disabilities.
  3. Remember that you can take time to review the IEP before signing the final document. However, new and/or modified services will not start until the IEP has been signed.
