Introduction
San Francisco Unified School District is committed to identifying, locating, and evaluating children and young adults who may have disabilities and need special education or related services. This process is called Child Find.
Who can get help? Link to this section
Under federal and state law, children and young adults from age 3 through 21 may qualify for special education services in public schools if they are found eligible as a student with a disability.
If you live in San Francisco and suspect your child may have a disability that affects learning, behavior, communication, or development, please contact:
1. Students enrolled in SFUSD public schools (TK–12) Link to this section
If your child is currently enrolled in an SFUSD school:
- Contact your child’s school of attendance and ask to speak with the principal or special education staff about your concerns and the special education evaluation process.
2. Students in private schools or homeschool (Parentally Placed Private School Students) Link to this section
If your child attends a private school or homeschool program located in San Francisco:
- Contact the Parentally Placed Private School Student (PPPSS) / Private School Services office
- Staff will help you understand options for assessment, special education eligibility, and equitable services.
3. Preschool-age children (ages 3–5) Link to this section
If your child is age 3–5 and not yet in kindergarten:
- Contact SFUSD Early Education / Early Childhood Special Education to discuss your concerns and how to request an evaluation.
