Becoming Fluent in English & Leading Change - Highlights for May 19-25, 2015

Highlights

SFUSD is a linguistically diverse school system, with students who speak 71 different languages. This week, more than 65 students at Buena Vista Horace Mann (BVHM) will be celebrated by the school for demonstrating English fluency and being reclassified from English Learner to Fluent English Proficient. SFUSD leads many districts in reclassifying students quickly, thereby exiting students out of supplemental English language development classes and giving students more opportunities in their schedule to take electives and more advanced academic classes.

When:     Wednesday, May 20 / 10:00-10:30 a.m.

Where:    BVHM / 3351 23rd St.

Last fall, a group of Thurgood Marshall High students started talking about how to improve their cafeteria and sketched up some ideas. Their plan fit well within the goals of SFUSD's Future Dining Experience and through a partnership with an organization called The Future Project, a Dream Director helped the students shape their transformative plan into a hub for the school community. Four other student initiatives involving school culture and school food have also been making improvements to Marshall High’s student life this year, and all these student-led projects will be celebrated on Friday.

When:            Friday, May 22 / 11:30-12:30

Where:           Marshall HS / 45 Conkling St.
