Ballot measures & better attendance: Highlights for Oct. 18 - 24, 2016

Attorney General Kamala Harris will be at John Muir Elementary this week to congratulate the school for making big improvements to student attendance. Principal Shawn Mansager and others will be discussing the steps that teachers, staff and families have taken over the last few years to get students to school on time every day ,which is a habit and mindset that leads to more class time and a better education for the students throughout their years in school.

Mayor Ed Lee* will drop, cover and hold on with Bret Harte Elementary students during the Great California Shakeout. Lee will also be talking to students about the importance of having an earthquake plan prepared with their families at home. Each year, SFUSD teams up with the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management to practice a drill districtwide. This year, San Francisco Fire Chief Joanne Captain Hayes-White and Interim Police Chief Toney Chaplin will be joining the school for the drill. San Francisco’s public school students have been taking part in this statewide emergency exercise since it began in 2008.

City teens will be tackling the pros and cons of this November’s ballot measures -- especially the ones that affect their families and communities. If passed, Propositions N and F will increase the number of enfranchised voters in San Francisco. Proposition F will lower the voting age to foster civic engagement in San Francisco youth, and Proposition N will allow non-citizen parents and guardians of SFUSD to vote in school board elections. Led by the SFUSD Student Advisory Council (SAC), hundreds of students are expected to attend the panel. The SAC is a citywide, youth-led organization that is committed to providing a voice for SFUSD students by representing and presenting the interests of students to the administrative and policymaking bodies of the SFUSD.
