Water & warmth on Valentine's Day: Highlights for February 14 - 20, 2017

Highlights

Across the city, there are approximately 20,168 gallons of rainwater stored in 28 schoolyard cisterns. Thanks to recent downfalls, the water tanks (almost empty at the beginning of the school year) are now full. The tanks are installed to collect rain from school roofs to be used for watering school gardens. At Fairmount Elementary, Education Outside corps member Sophie Case will be leading first-graders in a science lesson on the water cycle and talking about the importance of their school's own cistern to conserve water. Education Outside is a nonprofit that works to advance outdoor science in public schools and create school gardens as living laboratories. This program brings science and nature directly into the hands of more than 17,000 SFUSD students each year.

A few weeks ago, one student at John Muir Elementary put up a poster in the school hallway inviting her fellow students to join her in a knitting club. But not to make those hipster slouchy beanies for themselves -- instead they would make scarves for the homeless. Now, with dozens of club members learning to knit, students meet every day at lunch to work on their projects. Principal Mansager says he sees them with yarn in hand during recess sometimes as well. Come see the kids in action.
