SFUSD Board of Education Passes Resolution Aimed at Improving Latinx Student Success
The San Francisco Board of Education approved a resolution Tuesday night in support of prioritizing Latinx student success and eliminating disparities between Latinx student achievement and other student groups. The resolution also calls for the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) to develop strategies to improve school environments and support systems for Latinx students.
Co-authored by Vice President Mark Sanchez and Commissioner Gabriela Lopez, the resolution establishes two new advisory and oversight bodies: the SFUSD Latinx Community Council (LCC), a community advisory body comprised of Latinx parents, students, educators, service providers, and community members; and the Latinx Internal Oversight Committee, comprised of leadership from the Superintendent’s Cabinet and other key departments within SFUSD.
“By promoting more visibility and representation of the Latinx community within our schools’ curriculum and by recruiting and retaining more Latinx educators and school-site staff, we can greatly improve the learning experience for our Latinx students,” said Board of Education Vice President Mark Sanchez. “We remain committed to creating vibrant, engaging centers of learning that empower all students to achieve their full potential.”
Along with utilizing data-driven approaches to track Latinx student achievement and socioemotional measures, the resolution also calls upon SFUSD to develop new academic programming that exposes Latinx students to career pathways where Latinxs are disproportionately underrepresented.
“Eliminating the achievement gap for Latinx students requires a holistic framework and enhanced accountability measures,” Commissioner Gabriela Lopez said. “We must consider the structural and systemic barriers along with linguistic and cultural barriers that have impeded greater partnership between the district and Latinx families and community members.”
