Student Teaching in SFUSD
This page is for student teachers enrolled in a university or teacher preparation program who plan to complete their student teaching in the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD).
Step 1: Confirm Your University Has an Active MOU
Before you can student teach in SFUSD, your university must have an active Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the district.
Universities with Active MOUs for the 2026–27 School Year
- Academy of Art University
- Alliant International University
- CalStateTEACH
- CSU, East Bay
- Dominican University of California
- National University
- Saint Mary's College of California
- San Francisco State University
- San Jose State University
- University of La Verne
- University of San Francisco
- University of the Pacific
MOUs in Process
The MOUs for these universities are not yet complete. Student teachers cannot start until the MOU has been completed.
- National University (county school placements for student and intern teachers)
- Notre Dame de Namur University (student teachers and intern teachers)
- Sonoma State University
- Western Governors University
Step 2: Next Steps
If your university has an active MOU: Let your placement supervisor or coordinator know that you would like a placement in SFUSD.
If your university does not have an active MOU: Your placement supervisor must contact studentteacher@sfusd.edu to begin the MOU process with the district.
Requirements for New University Partnerships
Going forward, SFUSD will only enter into new MOUs for student teaching and intern placements with educator preparation programs approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). This ensures that every candidate placed in our schools is on a clear path to a California teaching credential, and that our partnerships meet state requirements.
Current partners are not affected. Universities and programs that already have a current MOU with SFUSD will continue as usual, with no action needed.
For University Supervisors and Coordinators
If your program is CTC-approved and you would like to place student teachers or interns in SFUSD, email studentteacher@sfusd.edu with:
- Your institution's name
- The CTC-approved program(s) and credential type(s) you would like to place candidates in
- A point of contact for your program
