MLK MS: Staff Leaving MLK, New Teachers, Enrollment Round 2
Dear MLK Families,
Thank you for your support throughout this school year. From the beginning of the year with MLK's issue with the budget, to moving to Distance Learning, this has been an unusual year. Thank you families for your continued support and we wish everyone to have a safe summer break.

Message from Ms. Carter:
Hope you and your loved ones are well. I'd like to give everyone an update on my plans for next year. I will be back at MLK, but my role will be significantly different. I've been struggling with this decision for awhile, and have considered many different options, but it became clear to me early in the year that I needed to start working part-time next year. My husband and I are hoping to expand our family again soon and it makes sense for me to be at home for at least part of the week.
Unfortunately it's not possible for me to teach 7th grade ELA part-time, so instead I've decided I'll be the new "go-to" sub for MLK!
I don't have the words to express how much this community has meant to me over the last 6 years... In short, thank you for the love, support, and guidance.

Dear MLK Families,
I wanted to let you know how honored I have been to work with you all over the last 7 years! I have never been at a school longer than my time at MLK. I want you to know that my passion and dedication for students and families has grown over the years, so much so that I returned to graduate school to earn an administrative degree. Last week, I was offered and accepted a position as an Assistant Principal. My time at MLK will always be at the center of my heart, and please know that I will miss you all so much! There will be a new Social Worker, and I will assist in any way to make their transition smooth.

Enrollment Changes
Letters for Round 2 will be mailed today! If you applied for a new school placement, please check your mailbox in the next few days to look for a new placement letter. You can also log in to ParentVUE to see if your child received a new placement. Register by June 26.

8th Grade Families! SFUSD EPC has made changes to the Enrollment Process. If you applied for May Placement Round, please see the information below. If you have registered for High School in March/April and are satisfied with your High School Placement, there are no actions to take.
To respond to the needs of families and to protect the integrity of the student assignment process, SFUSD is shifting back the 2020-21 enrollment timeline.
Change #1: May Placement (Round 2) letters will now be mailed on June 12, and families will have to June 26 to register.
Change #2: We will have one Wait Pool instead of two, and will be accepting wait pool applications from June 15 to August 12.
Change #3: Open Enrollment will begin on July 6 to September 4.
We will provide more information in June on how to participate in Wait Pool and Open Enrollment.

Statement from the Administration Team at MLK to the Community
Dear MLK Community,
When faced with the most challenging of times, we are forced to dig deep within ourselves and tap into our core values and beliefs. We ask ourselves meaningful questions. And, the answers that come from deep within teaches others who we are as people. I'm sure many of you, like us, have been disturbed, outraged, and horrified by what is happening in our country regarding the murder of unarmed Black men and women by police officers. Over and over we witness Black lives ended by law enforcement, the resulting protests, exchanges of violence and destruction, and the perpetuation of that cycle. As we seem to be in a stage of violence and destruction, we want to quote Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who stated, “A riot is the language of the unheard.” For too many years, the cries of Black people have gone “unheard” leading to our current national state.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. placed his life on the line countless times. As a man, he had deep convictions rooted in his personal beliefs and values. One such belief was nonviolence. We quote, “We adopt the means of nonviolence because our end is a community at peace with itself. We will try to persuade with our words, but if our words fail, we will try to persuade with our acts.” As Black Americans, and their allies, fight to be heard, I’m reminded of how Dr. King used nonviolence to get the world to listen.
For the Black students, families, and their allies in the MLK community, please know that we are listening and we stand in solidarity with you. Please do not hesitate to reach out during these trying times.

7th Grade Tdap Vaccinations Due (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis)
Dear Parent/Guardians of SFUSD 6th Graders:
This is a gentle reminder that California law requires all 7th graders to get the following vaccinations:
● Tdap booster vaccine (ages 11-12) before the first day of 7th grade
● 2nd chicken pox (varicella) vaccine
● 2nd MMR vaccine
As the city begins to reopen, clinics should start offering vaccination services again soon. If your child needs these vaccines, or any other vaccine, contact your health provider or community clinic to make an appointment. Proof of vaccination can be brought to the main office when school starts again in August. If you have any questions, contact the SFUSD School Health Center at 415-242-2615. Thank you!

Congratulations on your student completing their journey through middle school!
Teachers and staff are putting together a package for your student that contains an MLK Class of 2020 hoodie and their completion certificate signed by Mr. Essien.
Please continue to borrow any laptop or wifi hotspot that was borrowed from MLK or SFUSD. Borrowed technology will be returned when school sites open back up.
To pick up their package and return any text books, library books, or athletic uniforms, please pay attention to the following instructions:

MLK Beacon Summer Program - Digital Legacy - Students Earn $100
Hello, San Francisco community! We want to invite all of our beloved San Francisco middle school students to join in our first virtual MLK Middle School Beacon Digital Legacy summer program. We will be providing trauma-informed, equity-centered programming by co-creating excellent, dynamic spaces for children to express their creativity and gain essential skills for them to thrive and be successful in all environments. Students will spend three hours working on a selection of themed projects, activities, and enrichments. Participants will have a much-needed hour break between morning and afternoon sessions. We know how important it is for our kids to retain and maintain skills they learned during the school year so Digital Legacy will also feature challenges and incentives for students to read and use the Freckle math program during their personal time. Cambios de inscripción en el SFUSD

¡Familias de octavo grado! SFUSD EPC ha realizado cambios en el proceso de inscripción. Si solicitó la ronda de inscripción de mayo, consulte la información a continuación. Grading for Spring 2020
Board of Education's "New Grading Policy for Distance Learning," April 29, 2020. If you want to read the entire policy, it can be accessed HERE.
- For students in grades 6 through 12, teachers will assign "Credit / No Credit" for each course. A student who receives "No Credit" may receive "Credit" if the student completes the required work by the beginning of the Fall 2020 semester (earlier for graduating seniors)."

School Site Council May Video Conference RECAP
Thank you for all the families that participated in our May Virtual SSC. For more information about what was discussed at MLK SSC, please click on The Agenda, which can be viewed here. Some Highlights below:
- SFUSD is facing significant budget cuts. MLK budget priority is to keep the staff intact. Therefore, money will be taken from other places.
- Because of budget cuts, there will be huge reductions in non-staff spending.
- Marc Benioff, of Salesforce, has donated money to all Middle School in SFUSD.
- There will be staff changes in the 7th Grade.
- Looking into next school year, we are unsure what Fall Classes will look like, as that information has not been released from SFUSD.

New Pantry Pop-up in the area: San Francisco/Marin Food Bank will be at MLK Middle School on Mondays (9:00 AM- 1:00 PM)
The Food Bank will be at MLK MS for all Mondays in the month of June.

Although our 8th graders were unable to attend the UCLA/CSUN overnight trip this year, we hope that our 8th graders will be able to view College and Career information! Therefore, the College and Career Team at MLK has put together some College and Career presentations for students to view! Please click here to view the Presentation. 8th Grade Promotion Information
Due to current shelter-in-place guidelines, MLK will be adjusting the 8th grade promotion ceremony. For the last couple of weeks, teachers have been receiving feedback from 8th grade students, reviewing plans from other SFUSD middle schools, and brainstorming ideas to make this 8th grade promotion ceremony memorable and special. SFUSD Enrollment Changes

8th Grade Families! SFUSD EPC has made changes to the Enrollment Process. If you applied for May Placement Round, please see the information below. If you have registered for High School in March/April and are satisfied with your High School Placement, there are no actions to take.
To respond to the needs of families and to protect the integrity of the student assignment process, SFUSD is shifting back the 2020-21 enrollment timeline.
- Change #1: May Placement (Round 2) letters will now be mailed on June 12, and families will have to June 26 to register.
- Change #2: We will have one Wait Pool instead of two, and will be accepting wait pool applications from June 15 to August 12.
- Change #3: Open Enrollment will begin on July 6 to September 4.
We will provide more information in June on how to participate in Wait Pool and Open Enrollment.
In the meantime, please reach out to us for any questions you have about these changes.

San Francisco-Marin Food Bank has another pop-up that will be opening in the area. San Francisco-Marin Food Bank will be at MLK Middle School on Mondays (9AM - 1PM). If Cow Palace is too far for some folks, San Francisco-Marin Food Bank encourages you to try checking out the pop-up pantry at MLK or some of the other pantry pop-ups throughout the city. For people's safety and to minimize crowds, San Francisco-Marin Food Bank encourages people to please just go to one pop-up pantry and stay home when possible.

Summer Bridge Program for 8th Graders
Summer Bridge is a free virtual five-week summer program designed to assist identified students with a smooth transition from middle to high school. Students will receive in-depth academic guidance, develop/increase social and emotional skills, and participate in team-building activities. Students will work with San Francisco Unified School District Teachers and community partners to gain the skills necessary for success in high school and enriching electives that help them to build skills and develop interests. JCYC Summer Program
JCYC is cordially inviting MLK Students to our FREE virtual summer program this upcoming summer from June 3rd - June 5th.
Join us and your fellow MLK classmates for some virtual summer fun.
The 3-day event will include high school and college informational presentations, student-led panel/Q&A sessions, and a healthy cooking workshop.
All materials for this program will be provided for free and there will be chances to receive prizes for participation.

Dear Parent/Guardian:
We wish to continue to provide meaningful learning and social experiences for your child during the closure of schools and YMCA of San Francisco (YSF) facilities. While schools are closed, YSF is providing distance-based, virtual enrichment programming and homework help for its after-school program participants through online platforms. YSF will use online platforms for video conferencing that participants, parents/guardians and/or staff will access via the Internet and use for purposes of communication and programming. These platforms include: Zoom, Google, SFUSD email accounts, Xbox Live and PlayStation Plus. As much as possible, we will try to use the same platforms used by SFUSD so you are able to use the same devices and similar procedures to access the programming.
In addition, you will need to provide the following:
Participants are required to have a YMCA Beacon Registration Form on file. There is no fee for participation. Please contact Site Director, Grecia Mendez at 415-484-6447 or gmendez@ymcasf.net with any questions regarding registration or if you would like to fill out an electronic version of the registration form.
We will use the online applications for the following program activities:
- Group chats, video conferencing, homework help, sharing projects, and video watching.
Our commitment to keeping the young people we serve safe is always our number one priority. YSF will actively monitor participant activity on online applications and will make every effort to protect participant information. To the extent possible within the platforms used, we will control access to the online activities, maintain controls over the data collected, prohibit re-disclosure of participant information, limit the purposes for which the online platforms may use participant information, ensure there is no advertising, and ensure that no participant information is collected for commercial purposes.

Cambios de inscripción en el SFUSD

The next School Site Council (SSC) Meeting will be on May 19, 2020. Due to Shelter in Place orders, the meeting will be conducted online via Zoom Video Conference. SFUSD Enrollment Changes

8th Grade Families! SFUSD EPC has made changes to the Enrollment Process. If you applied for May Placement Round, please see the information below. If you have registered for High School in March/April and are satisfied with your High School Placement, there are no actions to take.
To respond to the needs of families and to protect the integrity of the student assignment process, SFUSD is shifting back the 2020-21 enrollment timeline.
- Change #1: May Placement (Round 2) letters will now be mailed on June 12, and families will have to June 26 to register.
- Change #2: We will have one Wait Pool instead of two, and will be accepting wait pool applications from June 15 to August 12.
- Change #3: Open Enrollment will begin on July 6 to September 4.
We will provide more information in June on how to participate in Wait Pool and Open Enrollment.
In the meantime, please reach out to us for any questions you have about these changes.

New Pantry Pop-up in the area: San Francisco/Marin Food Bank will be at MLK Middle School on Mondays (9:00 AM- 1:00 PM)
San Francisco-Marin Food Bank has another pop-up that will be opening in the area. San Francisco-Marin Food Bank will be at MLK Middle School on Mondays (9AM - 1PM). If Cow Palace is too far for some folks, San Francisco-Marin Food Bank encourages you to try checking out the pop-up pantry at MLK or some of the other pantry pop-ups throughout the city. For people's safety and to minimize crowds, San Francisco-Marin Food Bank encourages people to please just go to one pop-up pantry and stay home when possible.

Attendance
This is a reminder for all families about attendance during Distance Learning.
Engaging in Distance Learning is required. We do understand that these are stressful times and there may be obstacles at home that make it difficult to attend every virtual class meeting and complete all assignments. We are asking that students engage in Distance Learning to their fullest ability, and that students ask for help from teachers and counselors when needed. If students choose not to participate in Distance Learning (not completing assignments in Google Classroom, not attending virtual class meetings), they will be considered “absent” from school. Please reach out to your teachers or Student Support if your child is having trouble engaging in Distance Learning; they are here to help you.

Virtual Programming (Interactive): Parent Notice
Dear Parent/Guardian:
We wish to continue to provide meaningful learning and social experiences for your child during the closure of schools and YMCA of San Francisco (YSF) facilities. While schools are closed, YSF is providing distance-based, virtual enrichment programming and homework help for its after-school program participants through online platforms. YSF will use online platforms for video conferencing that participants, parents/guardians and/or staff will access via the Internet and use for purposes of communication and programming. These platforms include: Zoom, Google, SFUSD email accounts, Xbox Live and PlayStation Plus. As much as possible, we will try to use the same platforms used by SFUSD so you are able to use the same devices and similar procedures to access the programming.
In addition, you will need to provide the following:
Participants are required to have a YMCA Beacon Registration Form on file. There is no fee for participation. Please contact Site Director, Grecia Mendez at 415-484-6447 or gmendez@ymcasf.net with any questions regarding registration or if you would like to fill out an electronic version of the registration form.
We will use the online applications for the following program activities:
- Group chats, video conferencing, homework help, sharing projects, and video watching.
Our commitment to keeping the young people we serve safe is always our number one priority. YSF will actively monitor participant activity on online applications and will make every effort to protect participant information. To the extent possible within the platforms used, we will control access to the online activities, maintain controls over the data collected, prohibit re-disclosure of participant information, limit the purposes for which the online platforms may use participant information, ensure there is no advertising, and ensure that no participant information is collected for commercial purposes.

La próxima reunión del Consejo Directivo Escolar (SSC) será el 19 de mayo de 2020. Debido a la orden de Refugio en el lugar, la reunión se llevará a cabo a través de Zoom Video Conference. Cambios de inscripción en el SFUSD

¡Familias de octavo grado! SFUSD EPC ha realizado cambios en el proceso de inscripción. Si solicitó la ronda de inscripción de mayo, consulte la información a continuación. Si se inscribió en la escuela secundaria en marzo / abril y está satisfecho con su colocación en la escuela secundaria, no hay medidas que tomar.
Para responder a las necesidades de las familias y proteger la integridad del proceso de asignación de estudiantes, SFUSD está cambiando la línea de tiempo de inscripción 2020-21.
- Cambio 1: Las cartas de inscripción de mayo (ronda 2) se enviarán por correo el 12 de junio, y las familias deberán registrarse el 26 de junio.
- Cambio 2: Tendremos un grupo de espera en lugar de dos, y aceptaremos solicitudes de grupo de espera del 15 de junio al 12 de agosto.
- Cambio 3: la inscripción abierta comenzará del 6 de julio al 4 de septiembre.
Proporcionaremos más información en junio sobre cómo participar en Wait Pool y Open Enrollment.

Programación virtual (interactiva): aviso para padres

San Francisco-Marin Food Bank has another pop-up that will be opening in the area. San Francisco-Marin Food Bank will be at MLK Middle School on Mondays (9AM - 1PM). If Cow Palace is too far for some folks, San Francisco-Marin Food Bank encourages you to try checking out the pop-up pantry at MLK or some of the other pantry pop-ups throughout the city. For people's safety and to minimize crowds, San Francisco-Marin Food Bank encourages people to please just go to one pop-up pantry and stay home when possible.

Attendance
This is a reminder for all families about attendance during Distance Learning.
Engaging in Distance Learning is required. We do understand that these are stressful times and there may be obstacles at home that make it difficult to attend every virtual class meeting and complete all assignments. We are asking that students engage in Distance Learning to their fullest ability, and that students ask for help from teachers and counselors when needed. If students choose not to participate in Distance Learning (not completing assignments in Google Classroom, not attending virtual class meetings), they will be considered “absent” from school. Please reach out to your teachers or Student Support if your child is having trouble engaging in Distance Learning; they are here to help you.

Dynamic Mindfulness Zoom Session
From Dynamic Mindfulness Website:
Developed by the Niroga Institute in 2005, Dynamic Mindfulness has been embraced by educators and health professionals across the country. It integrates what we call the Mindful ABCs: Action, Breathing, and Centering into a powerful intervention that can be implemented in the classroom or clinic in 5-minute to 20-minute sessions, three to five times a week.
The purpose of teaching Dynamic Mindfulness in schools is to provide students with ways to manage their stress, to find a sense of safety in their own bodies, and to take positive action to change their emotional and mental states.

Re: Week 2 & New Distance Learning Schedule
Greetings MLK Family,
We just finished an exciting first week of Distance Learning at MLK Middle School. Today marks the beginning of the second week of Distance Learning. This is a new way of teaching for us. It becomes increasingly important for students and families to provide feedback on the design and delivery of this new method for instruction. Our program is designed to continue the educational development of your child. Feedback on your child’s experience with this new process is important and will help improve the quality of instruction delivered to your child. A Google form is being used to gather your feedback and will be available in Chinese and Spanish. Please complete the form when you receive it and assist us in improving the educational experience of your child.
At the conclusion of the first week of Distance Learning, we became aware of a few things. Parents, here are the few things we would like to bring to your attention after the conclusion of our first week of Distance Learning. These topics were chosen based on administrator observations:
- Assignments Turned In: some assignments were submitted after 11:00 PM and midnight. We are grateful for all assignments being completed. However, the time of some submissions indicate a sleep pattern that may not be able to take full advantage of the Distance Learning Schedule provided. Also, it may indicate your child is not getting enough sleep to function at their maximum capacity during the day. Sleep regulation is important for your growing child.
- Online Skills: students are required to use technology to turn in assignments. Please review your child’s assignments and their submission requirements. Make sure your child has practiced and developed the appropriate skills to complete their assignments: writing their thoughts on an electronic screen, real-time editing on Google documents, knowing how to make comments on Google documents, taking a picture of their work with a cell phone and uploading it to their Google Classroom...If there are any challenges with these skills and other skills not mentioned, we have staff members willing to assist. Make sure your child signs up for 1:1, small group, or Office Hours. Parents needing support can reach out as well.
- On-time Submission of Work: all work should be submitted on-time. On-time submission provides the teacher with the appropriate time to examine your child’s work and provide the required feedback for improvement. Also, on-time submission and feedback can help a student determine if they need to sign-up for 1:1, small group, or Office Hours. Timely help is crucial for continued academic development.
- Daily Exercising: school closures have significantly impacted the daily exercise students receive from physical education. Our amazing PE Teachers designed daily workout lessons for all children. Please assist your child in completing these daily exercises. Feel free to join in. It might be fun for you to exercise with your child.
- Student Support as an Option: our Student Support Department is available to meet with your child virtually. If you feel your child should talk to an adult to work through some issues or if you feel you need assistance around some challenges at home, please reach out to our Student Support Department. You are not alone. We have adults to assist you.
- 8th Graders: school closures did not impact each grade level equally. The 8th Grade had the largest impact on its activities for the year. Currently, we are engaging in dialogue with students and teachers to try and design some virtual replacements for them, including an online promotional ceremony. Stay tuned for future announcements and requests to support.
The last thing I need to bring to your attention is a change in MLK’s Distance Learning Schedule for students and teachers. United Educators of San Francisco and the School District were able to reach an agreement on the working conditions for teachers during school closures. This agreement acknowledges teachers as parents, significant others, and caregivers responsible for children and loved ones sheltered at home. Recognizing the needs of teachers as parents, significant others, and caregivers, who need to support their families in a time of need, an agreement was made requiring teachers to work no more than 240 minutes (4 hours) per day. Changes to the MLK Distance Learning Schedules reflect this agreement. Please see the attached document for the new Student and Staff schedules. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact the administration.

Re: Semana 2 y Nuevo Horario de Aprendizaje a Distancia
Saludos Familia MLK,
Acabamos de terminar una emocionante primera semana de Aprendizaje a Distancia en la escuela secundaria MLK. Hoy marca el comienzo de la segunda semana de Aprendizaje a Distancia. Esta es una nueva forma de enseñar para nosotros. Cada vez es más importante que los estudiantes y las familias nos proporcione comentarios sobre el diseño y la entrega de este nuevo método de instrucción. Nuestro programa está diseñado para continuar el desarrollo educativo de su hijo/hija. La retroalimentación/comentarios sobre la experiencia de su hijo/hija con este nuevo proceso es importante y ayudará a mejorar la calidad de la instrucción entregada a su hijo/hija. Se está generando un formulario de Google para recopilar sus comentarios el cual está disponible en los idiomas Chino y Español. Favor de Completar el formulario de encuesta cuando lo reciba y ayúdenos a mejorar la experiencia educativa de su hijo/hija.
Al finalizar la primera semana de Aprendizaje a Distancia, nos dimos cuenta de algunas cosas. Padres, estas son las pocas cosas que nos gustaría llamar su atención después de la conclusión de nuestra primera semana de Aprendizaje a Distancia. Estos temas fueron elegidos en base a las observaciones del Personal Administrativo:
- Tareas entregadas: algunas tareas se enviaron después de las 11:00 p.m. y la medianoche. Estamos agradecidos por todas las tareas que se completaron. Sin embargo, el tiempo de algunas presentaciones indica un patrón de sueño que puede no ser capaz de aprovechar al máximo el Programa de Aprendizaje a Distancia provisto. Además, puede indicar que su hijo no está durmiendo lo suficiente para funcionar a su capacidad máxima durante el día. La regulación del sueño es importante para su niño/niña en crecimiento.

Dynamic Mindfulness Zoom Session
From Dynamic Mindfulness Website:
Developed by the Niroga Institute in 2005, Dynamic Mindfulness has been embraced by educators and health professionals across the country. It integrates what we call the Mindful ABCs: Action, Breathing, and Centering into a powerful intervention that can be implemented in the classroom or clinic in 5-minute to 20-minute sessions, three to five times a week.
The purpose of teaching Dynamic Mindfulness in schools is to provide students with ways to manage their stress, to find a sense of safety in their own bodies, and to take positive action to change their emotional and mental states.

Accepting Your March Placement Offer for School Year 2020-21
The EPC will be closed to the public until at least May 1st. Assignment offers for the 2020-21 school year will be mailed as planned on March 20th, and families can respond to their offer online or via mail. Please do not go to the EPC or schools to respond in person.
Families who applied by the January 17, 2020 deadline will be mailed their assignment offer letter on March 20, 2020. UPDATE: The deadline to register is April 17, 2020. We encourage everyone to accept your assignment even if you would like to continue to apply for a different school.

Online Learning Plan for MLK Students
Greetings MLK Families,
I hope that this communication finds you and your family in good health and spirits. Due to COVID-19 and the closure of the school district, instruction for students will occur on-line ONLY. Online learning or “Distance Learning” begins on April 13. Classes will be completely online and students will be expected to complete work each day for school.
There are several resources all students will need to know how to use:
- Google Classroom
- Gmail (student school account)
- Freckle
- Zoom
All of these resources are available as websites on a laptop, computer, or tablet. Google Classroom, Gmail, and Zoom are also available as apps on smartphones. Freckle does not have an app, but still works if you type student.freckle.com on the web browser on a smartphone. All of these apps are free for student users.
Zoom is going to be used for students to meet with teachers and tutors. Zoom is a video app that works in a similar way to Skype or Facetime. Students can attend class sessions to get face-to-face help on their assignments. Please encourage your student to look on Google Classroom for information from their teacher on when they will be holding office hours and for instructions on how to join the Zoom meetings.
Please make sure that your students know how to log in on Freckle. All students are expected to get 50 minutes per week on Freckle for math practice. If they have any questions about logging in, then they can reach out to their math teacher.
All students should be checking their email and Google Classroom every day. This is where they will receive reminders for assignments from their teachers, school wide emails, and other announcements.
For students requiring a laptop at home, they will be distributed at MLK Middle School on Monday, April 6 and Wednesday, April 8, from 12:00 PM -2:00 PM. Free Grab & Go Meals Available During School Closure
SFUSD will provide free meals to all children 18 and younger during the school closure. Breakfast, lunch, supper, fresh fruit, vegetables and milk will be available. No identification or proof of school enrollment is required. Adults can now pick up meals for children without a child present. Shelf-stable meals will also be available. Families will not need to enter the school building for pick-up. Visit sfusd.edu/schoolfood for a map of sites and the latest information.
Beginning Monday, March 30, we will be open two (2) days per week (Monday and Wednesday) from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the following sites. Each bag will have meals for multiple days. This new schedule was developed to better follow guidance on social distancing.

Xfinity WiFi Free For Everyone: Xfinity WiFi hotspots across the country will be available to anyone who needs them for free – including non-Xfinity Internet subscribers. Pausing Our Data Plan: With so many people working and educating from home, we want our customers to access the internet without thinking about data plans. While the vast majority of our customers do not come close to using 1TB of data in a month, we are pausing our data plans for 60 days giving all customers Unlimited data for no additional charge.
No Disconnects or Late Fees: We will not disconnect a customer’s internet service or assess late fees if they contact us and let us know that they can’t pay their bills during this period. Our care teams will be available to offer flexible payment options and can help find other solutions.
Internet Essentials Free to New Customers: As announced yesterday, it’s even easier for low-income families who live in a Comcast service area to sign-up for Internet Essentials, the nation’s largest and most comprehensive broadband adoption program. New customers will receive 60 days of complimentary Internet Essentials service, which is normally available to all qualified low-income households for $9.95/month. Additionally, for all new and existing Internet Essentials customers, the speed of the program’s Internet service was increased to 25 Mbps downstream and 3 Mbps upstream. That increase will go into effect for no additional fee and it will become the new base speed for the program going forward.

Adding Student Support Google Classroom to Contact Student Support Staff
MLK Families,I hope this message finds you well. All of the teachers and staff at MLK miss seeing our students!
Schools will stay closed through at least May 1st. This means that it will become more important that students check their email everyday for communication from teachers and Student Support.
Student Support will be using Google Classroom for communication with students, as well as a place to provide important wellness resources and support for students and families.
Please ensure that your student adds the Student Support Google Classroom so they can stay in communication with their counselors, our social worker, and the school nurse. See the instructions below:

Laptop Loan to students and Internet Access
2. MLK will be providing laptops for students to use at home if needed. Currently, school is scheduled to resume after Spring Break on 4/3. However, if the school district makes a decision to extend the school closure, we will be making a shift into “distance learning” (online learning). In preparation for SFUSD’s distance learning plan, we need to know if your MLK student needs a computer and can access the internet. If you do not have internet access, you may be able to get it using this link. If your student will need a computer (and you have not already communicated the need with your student’s home room teacher), please send a text message to our MLK text account at 415-993-0655, and include your student’s name, grade level, and if you can access the internet. You will then receive information on when and where to pick up a laptop.

8th Grade Families: Accepting Your March Placement Offer for School Year 2020-21

The Educational Placement Center (EPC) will be closed to the public until April 10th. School assignment offers for the 2020-21 school year will be mailed as planned on March 20th, and families can respond to their offer online or via mail. Please do not come to EPC to respond in person.
Families who applied by the January 17, 2020 deadline will be mailed their assignment offer letter on March 20, 2020. The deadline to register is April 10, 2020. We encourage everyone to accept your assignment even if you would like to continue to apply for a different school.
How to accept your school assignment for school year 2020-21
Please choose one of these remote/virtual ways to register your student.
Online: Sign onto ParentVue to accept or reject your school assignment. If you need an activation code, a letter should have been mailed to your home on March 16th. If you have not received your activation code, please call the EPC at 415-241-6085.
By Mail: Please complete the tear-off response sheet that was included in your offer letter and mail to “Educational Placement Center, 555 Franklin Street, Room 100, San Francisco CA 94102".Mail must be postmarked by April 10, 2020. EPC will email you after we have received your response.
If you need to cancel your school assignment, please contact us.
Whether or not you have registered for your assigned school, if you are leaving SFUSD please email us at EnrollinSchool@sfusd.edu with your child’s name, Student ID number, and birthdate to let us know of your cancellation.
If you wish to apply for a different school assignment, you may participate in the May Placement Period.

Free Grab & Go Meals Available During School Closure
SFUSD will provide free meals to all children 18 and younger during the school closure. Breakfast, lunch, supper, fresh fruit, vegetables and milk will be available. No identification or proof of school enrollment is required. Adults can now pick up meals for children without a child present. Shelf-stable meals will also be available. Families will not need to enter the school building for pick-up. Visit sfusd.edu/schoolfood for a map of sites and the latest information.
Beginning Monday, March 30, we will be open two (2) days per week (Monday and Wednesday) from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the following sites. Each bag will have meals for multiple days. This new schedule was developed to better follow guidance on social distancing.

Comcast is taking steps to implement the following new policies for the next 60 days, and other initiatives:
Xfinity WiFi Free For Everyone: Xfinity WiFi hotspots across the country will be available to anyone who needs them for free – including non-Xfinity Internet subscribers. For a map of Xfinity WiFi hotspots, visit www.xfinity.com/wifi. Once at a hotspot, consumers should select the “xfinitywifi” network name in the list of available hotspots, and then launch a browser.
Pausing Our Data Plan: With so many people working and educating from home, we want our customers to access the internet without thinking about data plans. While the vast majority of our customers do not come close to using 1TB of data in a month, we are pausing our data plans for 60 days giving all customers Unlimited data for no additional charge.
No Disconnects or Late Fees: We will not disconnect a customer’s internet service or assess late fees if they contact us and let us know that they can’t pay their bills during this period. Our care teams will be available to offer flexible payment options and can help find other solutions.
Internet Essentials Free to New Customers: As announced yesterday, it’s even easier for low-income families who live in a Comcast service area to sign-up for Internet Essentials, the nation’s largest and most comprehensive broadband adoption program. New customers will receive 60 days of complimentary Internet Essentials service, which is normally available to all qualified low-income households for $9.95/month. Additionally, for all new and existing Internet Essentials customers, the speed of the program’s Internet service was increased to 25 Mbps downstream and 3 Mbps upstream. That increase will go into effect for no additional fee and it will become the new base speed for the program going forward.

San Francisco (March 25, 2020) - The San Francisco Unified School District is extending temporary school closures through May 1, 2020. SFUSD is one of six Bay Area counties that announced extending school closures today.
“The safety and wellness of our students, school personnel, and the community are our highest priority right now,” said SFUSD Superintendent Dr. Vincent Matthews. “In consultation with public health officials across 6 counties in the Bay Area, we have decided to extend school closures for the health of the Bay Area. Families need to continue to shelter in place across the region in order to minimize the spread of COVID-19 to the greatest extent possible.”
During this time, all are urged to keep practicing the guidance provided by Public Health Officers including:
- Staying home to save lives
- Washing hands often with soap and water
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
- Contacting your healthcare provider if you are experiencing any symptoms such as fever, cough, or difficulty breathing.
The District has been preparing for extended school closures. As part of this effort, SFUSD is implementing a phased-in continuity of learning plan districtwide. This week SFUSD shared optional learning resources that students and their caregivers can engage in at home and began lending computers to students who do not have one. Teachers are preparing both non-digital and digital learning options and plans are in place to begin a more comprehensive approach to distance learning by April 13.
SFUSD is continuing to provide free meals to students and families, offering a variety of meal options.
“We understand public schools are an essential part of our greater community and we need to work together during this time to take care of each other,” said SF Board of Education President Mark Sanchez. “This is a time to make short term sacrifices and set the right example for our young people.”
Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Mateo and Santa Clara County schools, along with the San Francisco Unified School District, agreed to extend closures. With the support and collaboration of the Public Health Officers in the respective counties, the County Superintendents of Schools recognized the need to extend the period of school closures through May 1, 2020.
Building on the regional coordination that six Bay Area jurisdictions took on March 16, 2020 in issuing the Health Officer order for all residents to shelter in place, Bay Area counties have been working together to align strategies and practices during this unprecedented time for public education.

As for myself, and everybody I’m sure, there has been a lot going on personally and professionally. Personally I have been spending the last week adjusting to a new routine and doing my best to keep my own children (6th grader and kindergartener) engaged and active. Professionally, I’m dealing with the new reality of our school site being closed and how we will continue to best support our MLK students and families in this time of uncertainty.
The following is some information we want to make sure gets to you:
1. Currently, any work that teachers have posted online or given to students to take home is optional. While we would love for students to engage There are no expectations that students complete any work currently, and it will not affect their grade.

8th Grade Families: Accepting Your March Placement Offer for School Year 2020-21

The Educational Placement Center (EPC) will be closed to the public until April 10th. School assignment offers for the 2020-21 school year will be mailed as planned on March 20th, and families can respond to their offer online or via mail. Please do not come to EPC to respond in person.
Families who applied by the January 17, 2020 deadline will be mailed their assignment offer letter on March 20, 2020. The deadline to register is April 10, 2020. We encourage everyone to accept your assignment even if you would like to continue to apply for a different school.
How to accept your school assignment for school year 2020-21
Please choose one of these remote/virtual ways to register your student.
Online: Sign onto ParentVue to accept or reject your school assignment. If you need an activation code, a letter should have been mailed to your home on March 16th. If you have not received your activation code, please call the EPC at 415-241-6085.

Xfinity WiFi Free For Everyone: Xfinity WiFi hotspots across the country will be available to anyone who needs them for free – including non-Xfinity Internet subscribers. For a map of Xfinity WiFi hotspots, visit www.xfinity.com/wifi. Once at a hotspot, consumers should select the “xfinitywifi” network name in the list of available hotspots, and then launch a browser.
Pausing Our Data Plan: With so many people working and educating from home, we want our customers to access the internet without thinking about data plans. While the vast majority of our customers do not come close to using 1TB of data in a month, we are pausing our data plans for 60 days giving all customers Unlimited data for no additional charge.
No Disconnects or Late Fees: We will not disconnect a customer’s internet service or assess late fees if they contact us and let us know that they can’t pay their bills during this period. Our care teams will be available to offer flexible payment options and can help find other solutions.
Internet Essentials Free to New Customers: As announced yesterday, it’s even easier for low-income families who live in a Comcast service area to sign-up for Internet Essentials, the nation’s largest and most comprehensive broadband adoption program. New customers will receive 60 days of complimentary Internet Essentials service, which is normally available to all qualified low-income households for $9.95/month. Additionally, for all new and existing Internet Essentials customers, the speed of the program’s Internet service was increased to 25 Mbps downstream and 3 Mbps upstream. That increase will go into effect for no additional fee and it will become the new base speed for the program going forward.

I hope this message finds you well and healthy.
As for myself, and everybody I’m sure, there has been a lot going on personally and professionally. Personally I have been spending the last week adjusting to a new routine and doing my best to keep my own children (6th grader and kindergartener) engaged and active. Professionally, I’m dealing with the new reality of our school site being closed and how we will continue to best support our MLK students and families in this time of uncertainty.
The following is some information we want to make sure gets to you:
1. Currently, any work that teachers have posted online or given to students to take home is optional. While we would love for students to engage There are no expectations that students complete any work currently, and it will not affect their grade.
2. MLK will be providing laptops for students to use at home if needed. Currently, school is scheduled to resume after Spring Break on 4/3. However, if the school district makes a decision to extend the school closure, we will be making a shift into “distance learning” (online learning). In preparation for SFUSD’s distance learning plan, we need to know if your MLK student needs a computer and can access the internet. If you do not have internet access, you may be able to get it using this link. If your student will need a computer (and you have not already communicated the need with your student’s home room teacher), please send a text message to our MLK text account at 415-993-0655, and include your student’s name, grade level, and if you can access the internet. You will then receive information on when and where to pick up a laptop.

Message from Dr. Matthews below:
After long and careful deliberation, we have decided to close schools to students for 3 weeks beginning Monday, March 16 through the end of regularly scheduled spring break (which ends Friday, April 3). Staff will be working part of this time and using the time to prepare and train on how to educate and support community health during this pandemic.
Schools will be open to all students and staff tomorrow, Friday, March 13. If families want to keep students home tomorrow, it will be an excused absence.
Schools are an essential service and crucial to our communities. We are facing an unprecedented health crisis in our community, and new information is surfacing rapidly. It is likely our community will be seeing many more cases of COVID-19 in the coming weeks and months and this will require a measured, sustained response.
We are exploring with our City partners what we can do to support our students and families during this difficult time. We will be setting up ways to continue to provide meals for our students who rely on them. We are considering what, if any, childcare options we can extend to families over the next two weeks during this unplanned closure.
Students should stay home and minimize social contact as much as possible to keep caregivers and adult family members safe. Children have not been shown to be a high-risk group for serious illness from this virus. However, they can transmit the virus to those most vulnerable. Public health officials recommend that families make arrangements for childcare during closure that avoid leaving children with elderly people who are more vulnerable to the impact of the virus.
As parents and caregivers, you are your child’s first teacher, and you are your child’s most influential teacher. Ongoing developments regarding COVID-19 may be overwhelming, especially to younger children. Parents and caregivers can help children understand the situation better by discussing children’s questions and concerns.
We will be sharing more detailed information as soon as possible about how families can support student learning during school closures.

Free Meals Available during School Closure
On Monday 3/16, Between 10:00AM - 11:30AM, MLK MS will be providing Breakfast, milk, fruits and vegetables to all students. This will be a Grab and Go.

Emergency Childcare - From DCYF
To maintain the functionality of our City’s healthcare system in responding to COVID-19 and support our most vulnerable communities during school closures, San Francisco is opening emergency child and youth care centers for children of front line workers and low-income families. Care facilities safely provide recreation, learning, and food.
Beginning Monday, March 16, 2020, recreation centers and libraries will close to the public and operate as emergency care facilities. The decision comes in the wake of public school closures and other safety measures the City is undertaking around COVID-19. Parents on the front line include San Francisco-based hospital staff, Department of Public Health employees, and activated disaster service workers.

All students were given activation codes in their homerooms today. Please activate and create your own ParentVUE account to see the latest information about SFUSD and grades about your child as well. This is also used to connect with teachers about assignments.
