Highlights Feb. 4-8, 2019: Schools celebrate Lunar New Year

Highlights

Millions of people around the world are expected to celebrate Lunar New Year, including kindergartners at Lakeshore Elementary School. To ring in the Year of the Pig, students will walk through the school’s hallway and showcase dragons created by their classes for the Kindergarten Dragon Parade. The annual parade has been a school tradition for over 30 years.

In honor of Lunar New Year, Sunnyside Elementary School will celebrate with a festive New Year Parade on the school yard featuring a variety of student art projects. Art projects will highlight different symbols of traditional Chinese New Year celebrations, including Koi fish kites, handheld drums, paper lanterns, and a large-scale Chinese Dragon and Pig. The program will culminate with the 5th graders leading the school in a dragon and lion dance, complete with a traditional lettuce throwing finale.

West Portal Elementary School's Chinese Performing Arts Drumming Group will perform at a school assembly in celebration of Lunar New Year. The award-winning Chinese Performing Arts Program (CPAP) at West Portal is an extracurricular program offered to current students and run by volunteer parents and alumni. The assembly allows students to highlight the Chinese culture and showcase colorful costumes that are mostly hand sewn by volunteer parents. CPAP students have also participated in the San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade for the last 25+ years.

In honor of Lunar New Year, Noriega Early Education School will celebrate with a Professional Lion Dance on the school yard. The Pre-K and Transitional Kindergarten students will also perform a lion dance to the community at the event. The school is also celebrating the completion of the playground renovation, which is designed to be accessible, safe and fun for students.
