Drinking Water & Open Spaces: Highlights for January 12-18, 2016

Highlights

Water fountains are ok, but an even better way to drink tap water at school is the ‘drink tap’ fountains that have been installed at various SFUSD schools since 2011. This week, Supervisor Scott Wiener will join Mission High students as they unveil their new fountain, which dispenses tap water to personal water bottles. Students will be getting a free new water bottle as well. The Drink Tap in Schools initiative in San Francisco is a partnership between SFUSD, the SF Public Utilities Commission, Department of the Environment, and San Francisco Department of Public Health. It is one way SFUSD aims to promote healthier, more sustainable habits among the district’s students. In addition, access to a water station provides a healthy alternative to single-use plastic water bottles. To date, there are 32 drink tap fountains in SFUSD schools.

When:   Friday, Jan. 15 / 11:25 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Junipero Serra Elementary will be throwing its schoolyard gates open to neighbors at a grand opening celebration of the Shared Schoolyard Project. The project was revamped under the leadership of city partners, including District 2 Supervisor Mark Farrell, who has led fundraising efforts, to increase more open space for our children and families to play and gather. Currently, 31 public schools citywide are enrolled in the Shared Schoolyard Project. Supervisors Mark Farrell and David Campos will join the celebration, which includes a ribbon-cutting ceremony, books and services from the San Francisco Public Library, games, chalk painting, soccer, and poetry.
