Statements from SFUSD Superintendent Matthews, SF Board of Education President Jenny Lam re. Mayor’s Appointment of New Board Commissioners

Press Release

San Francisco (March 11, 2022) - San Francisco Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Vincent Matthews and SF Board of Education President Jenny Lam joined Mayor London Breed in welcoming three new SF Board of Education commissioners today.

The Superintendent and Board President shared the following statements regarding Mayor London Breed’s appointment of three new commissioners to the Board of Education.

Statement from Superintendent Matthews:

“I look forward to working with our new leaders on the SF Board of Education. The mission of the San Francisco Unified School District is to provide each and every student the quality instruction and equitable support needed to thrive in the 21st Century.

Above all else, we are educators and our priority is and will continue to be helping students reach their full potential. I look forward to working with all of our commissioners to address the challenges and opportunities before us in collaboration with our district staff, families, students and community members.

“While there remain many urgent and important matters to realize our mission, at this moment in time our students and their families are counting on all district leaders to stay focused on these priorities above all else:

  • To maintain healthy and safe learning environments;
  • To create high quality learning experiences for our students that foster engaged and joyful learners and that support every student in reaching their potential;
  • To adopt a fiscally responsible budget that addresses short- and long-term structural deficits while remaining student-centered and fulfilling our legal obligations as both a school district and a County Office of Education; and
  • To hire a new superintendent who is committed to the shared core values of our school district and who possesses the priority competencies identified by our community.”

Statement from President Lam:

“I welcome the three new appointed commissioners and am excited to start working together. The entire board will take part in training over the next several months. This training will include protocols for the SF Board of Education related to financial decision making, student educational outcomes, curriculum and instruction, and key guidelines for effectively governing the District.

Our students and families are counting on us. Their needs are the first thing on my mind when I wake up each day.  And now, moving forward with a new Board, I know that those needs will be heard, addressed, and attended to as we govern this school district.”
