SELF Competencies: Principal Vision

#1. Vision

SOCIAL JUSTICE LEADERSHIP: Take responsibility for equitable academic, civic, and social-emotional outcomes for students who have been historically underserved by schools and society.

Vision

Develop, communicate, and implement a school-wide vision focused on students, equity, and excellence with a specific emphasis on students with IEPs; students who are African-American, Latinx, Pacific Islander, or English Learners; and other underserved students.

Indicators

  • Personal vision: Develop and regularly share an authentic leadership story that connects a leader’s experiences to the school’s vision of equity.

  • Shared vision: Solicit input from diverse stakeholders to create a shared vision, aligned to the district vision, for equitable achievement and experience.

  • Communication: Use stories and data to bring the school’s vision to life, highlight key strategies for implementing the vision for equity, and lift up and celebrate successes.

  • Implementation: Maintains focus on the critical priorities outlined in the school’s vision through implementation of a strategic action plan.

Evidence of Impact

  • School vision is clearly articulated, understood, and embraced by stakeholders.

  • There is visible alignment between artifacts at the school level (vision statement, goals, Balanced Scorecard, etc.) and SFUSD’s mission, vision, strategic plan, core values, graduate profile, and service standards.

  • School vision articulates a focus on student academic achievement and social/emotional development and reflects high expectations for all students.

  • Equity framing at meetings and written documents — meeting agendas, newsletters, memos, etc. — regularly communicate key aspects of the school vision and emphasize efforts to close opportunity gaps.

  • Staff and community members report that the school is able to maintain a focus on critical priorities even in the face of shifting external demands.
