Board-Certified Teachers & Famous Authors - Highlights for January 13-19, 2015

Highlights

SFUSD now has 252 National Board Certified teachers, a greater percentage than any other California district, and this number is growing at a faster rate than the national average.  Like board-certified doctors and accountants, teachers who achieve this certification have met rigorous standards through intensive study, expert evaluation, self-assessmentand peer review. They build a portfolio that includes student work samples, assignments, videos of their teaching, and a thorough analysis of their work. The SF Board of Education and Superintendent Carranza will be congratulating the 38 teachers who just achieved certification this year.

When:  Tuesday, January 13 / 5:00 - 5:45 p.m.

Where: Irving G. Breyer Board Room / 555 Franklin St.

Newberry Award-winning author Katherine Applegate, who wrote “The One and Only Ivan” and the popular “Animorphs,” “Remnants” and “Everworld” series, will be visiting Visitacion Valley Elementary School to talk about how she researches her stories and her writing process. She’ll also read her newest book, “Ivan: The Remarkable True Story of the Shopping Mall Gorilla.” All students at the school, the majority of whom are socioeconomically disadvantaged and English language learners, take part in daily reading and writing workshops. A visit from Applegate is an important addition to their literacy program.
