Board of Education elects leaders for 2019

Press Release

The San Francisco Unified School District Board of Education elected its leaders for the 2019 year on Tuesday night. Board President Stevon Cook and Vice President Mark Sanchez will continue in their respective roles this year.

Cook has been serving as president, and Sanchez as vice president, since the departure of the previous board president, Hydra Mendoza-McDonnell, in September 2018.

Cook has served on the school board since 2016. He is a third generation San Franciscan and alumnus of Thurgood Marshall Academic High School. In addition to serving on the board, Cook is the Chief Executive Officer of Mission Bit, an education nonprofit that focuses on ending generational poverty through coding education.

“I’m honored that my colleagues entrusted me to serve in this role. I’m encouraged by their leadership and I believe we’re going to make meaningful strides that improve outcomes for our students and educators,” said President Cook.

Sanchez served on the Board of Education from 2001 to 2009. He was elected to the board again in 2016. Previously, he was a longtime teacher and principal in SFUSD schools.

The Board of Education is comprised of seven members, elected at large to serve four-year terms.
