NEW K-2 Early Reading Screening for 2025-26 Link to this section
Beginning in 2025–2026, students in kindergarten, grade one, and grade two must be screened (using a state approved assessment) for risk of reading difficulties per Education Code Section 53008.
The California Department of Education has shared a list of 3 reading screeners approved by the Reading Difficulties Risk Screener Selection Panel:
A Reading Screening is used to :
- Identify students who may be at risk of reading difficulties, including dyslexia.
- Implement a school’s comprehensive instructional strategy.
- Provide information for parents and educators to discuss student needs in a more informed way.
- Inform supports and services for students with reading difficulties
All K-2 Educators and school leaders are encouraged to attend an upcoming K-2 Reading Screener Review Session on Wednesday, March 12 from 3:30-5pm (extended hours will be provided to attendees). Register to attend at: bit.ly/AAOPDRegistration. Read this message for more details about the K-2 Reading Screening Review Session.
