Jefferson Elementary School Schoolyard Outdoor Learning Link to this section
Jefferson Elementary School was selected for a Schoolyard Outdoor Learning Project in 2023. HED Architects, alongside Gates + Associates Landscape Architects, worked to transform the existing site into an enhanced area for play and learning opportunities. This project was made possible through funding from the Bond Program, the SFPUC Green Infrastructure Grant, and the District 7 Supervisor Community Challenge Grant. The design team and Bond Program project manager conducted extensive community engagement with students, staff, and families to gather input and share project updates.
Construction wrapped up in the fall of 2025, and the Jefferson Elementary Schoolyard has made significant progress this summer. New trees, plantings, and bioretention areas have been added to the site. Students now enjoy a new play structure and improved play surfaces. Classroom settings have been expanded with new shaded outdoor spaces for learning, and campus safety has been enhanced with new gates and fencing.
Soon, the school will also receive new outdoor furniture to provide additional seating for students.
