District Assessments, 2020-21
Over the course of a school year, you receive information that can give you a more complete picture of your child’s academic progress. In addition to report cards and class assignments, SFUSD uses District Assessments to help you better understand your child’s strengths and opportunities for improvement in Reading and Math. You can use this information to partner with your child’s teacher about how to better support learning at home.
What are the District Assessments?
The Reading Inventory (grades 3-HS) provides information about your child’s performance in reading during this school year. With this information, teachers match your child with the appropriate books, design and plan instruction for all learners. This assessment is taken online in about 20-30 minutes.
Math Milestone (grades K-5 & HS) and Entry Tasks (grade 6-8) are opportunities for your child to show their learning and explain their thinking as they solve a series of math problems. These assessments are delivered digitally and students work on paper or in a blended paper/virtual environment, depending on their grade level and the requirements of each assessment. Milestone and Entry Tasks may be administered during independent work time or in-person instruction. Tasks take 30-60 minutes to complete.
When are the District Assessments administered?
Your child will take the Reading Inventory and the Math Milestone Task twice a year, once in the Fall and once in the Spring:
- Grades 3-8: Fall 2020: 10/8 - 11/5
- Grades 3-8: Spring 2021: 2/1-2/26
- High School: Fall 2020: 9/14-10/7
- High School: Spring 2021: 1/5-1/29
- Grades K-5: Fall 2020: by 11/5
- Grades K-5: Spring 2021: TBD
- Grades 6-8: Fall 2020: by 11/5
- Grades 6-8: Spring 2021: TBD
- High School: Fall 2020: by 11/6
- High School: Spring 2021: TBD
When will I receive my child’s District Assessment results, and how are they used?
District Assessment reports are provided to families via ParentVue in mid-November and early March, to align with Parent/Teacher Conference weeks. These results are an important source of information for all students, families, teachers, and staff to get an accurate picture of student learning. Using these results:
- Students can reflect on their own learning and goals.
- Families can support their child at home with their goals.
- Teachers provide feedback to students and inform instruction.
- District staff can improve District planning and supports.

During distance learning, how can I best support my child before, during, and after the District Assessment administration?
Here are some ways that families can support students with the District Assessments:
- Teachers will share with students the purpose of the assessment and instructions on how to take the assessment at home.
- Be sure that computer/laptop devices are charged and connected to WiFi.
- Help your child find the best space to take the assessment, and provide headphones if needed.
- Contact your child’s teacher if you’d like to know more about the assessment.
- Each student should take the assessment independently.
- You may assist your child with technology issues.
- Do not answer assessment questions for your child. Instead consider asking your child questions to encourage them to show their own learning. For example: What strategies have you used before?
- Encourage your child to do their best, and praise them for their efforts.
- Partner with your child’s teacher about the results of the test to better understand what you can do to support your child’s learning at home.
