Tasting, shaking & sailing: Highlights for October 13-19, 2015
It’s National School Lunch week, and students at Marshall High are inviting other students to taste test some new lunch menu items. The food is free of artificial colors and preservatives, contain no high-fructose corn syrup or trans fats. What’s more, students help create the menu. This week at lunch students will be tasting a new kid-inspired item, Hot Turkey & Cheddar Flatbread, and giving it a critical teen appraisal.

Each year SFUSD teams up with the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management to run a districtwide Great California Shakeout. This year, students at Yick Wo Elementary will be joined by Mayor Lee, Fire Captain Hayes-White, Police Chief Suhr, SF Board of Education commissioners and Superintendent Carranza as they drop, cover and hold on at exactly 10:15 a.m. San Francisco’s public school students have been taking part in this statewide emergency exercise since it began in 2008.

The Set Sail Learn education initiative launched in 1999 with a dual vision of creating more socio-economic diversity in sailing and of using sailing to impact disadvantaged and underserved youth. Through a grant from the St. Francis Sailing Foundation, this successful pilot is now offered to thousands of fourth-grade students in SF’s public schools. With a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) focus, students use the maritime classroom to study math (navigating the bay), ecology (the role of the Dungeness crab in its ecosystem), and harnessing wind energy (sailing). In addition, students focus on building teamwork, communication and leadership skills as they learn to sail. Enrollment in the Set Sail Learn program has skyrocketed from eight students in the inaugural class to an estimated 2,300 this year.

SFUSD, along with nine other school districts around the country, will join the national campaign, OUT for Safe Schools. The campaign builds on SFUSD’s ongoing commitment to create safe and supportive schools for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) students. Since 1990, SFUSD’s Support Services for LGBTQ Youth has been providing programming and support such as inclusive health education, middle and high school LGBTQ liaisons, the LGBTQ Families Dinner, and Gay-Straight Alliance Day. ‘Out for Safe School’ badges may be earned by students and staff by demonstrating that they are LGBTQ allies in various ways.
