Books for every classroom and information for every parent: Highlights for March 2-8, 2016
Business and civic leaders will be at Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy to celebrate Read Across America Day where thousands of new "leveled books" (reading material for each student that focuses on words and sentences of increasing complexity) are being delivered to all classrooms. The books are being donated by Salesforce.org, with support from local neighbors and the Cloud 9 Foundation. In partnership with First Book and SPARK* SF Public Schools, SFUSD will equip every kindergarten to fifth grade classroom with books and tools to provide literacy-rich environments and experiences. As it is Dr. Seuss’ birthday, his famous “Cat in the Hat” character will be on hand for the celebration of books.

Children in grades four and five can explore their interests in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) at STEM Day at Willie L. Brown Jr. Middle School. At the event, students will rotate through five activity stations in the school’s library, Maker’s Garage, gymnasium, computer lab, and science classroom. A teacher, with the help of a current student, will lead 25-minute STEM activities at each station. The school, which opened this fall, will be serving grades six and seven in the 2016-17 school year. WBMS has a state-of-the-art campus with the only middle school science laboratory in San Francisco.

The first "Parents as Partners" event for Chinese families in SFUSD will provide an opportunity for parents to discuss important issues in schools. San Francisco Board of Education Commissioner Sandra Fewer and Superintendent Richard Carranza will be with families as they attend informational workshops to answer questions about topics, including the new standardized testing system, SFUSD’s graduation requirements, English learner rights, and dealing with student stress and anxiety. The tailor-made day for Chinese families is to help empower and educate families about their rights and support families as they prepare their children for the future. All workshops will be presented in Cantonese (English translation available).
