Highlights Oct. 22-26, 2018: Students get lesson in online safety, Healthy eating helps student achievement, Family Literacy Night promotes reading

As part of SFUSD’s commitment to Cyber Security Month and National Bullying Prevention Month, 4th grade students at Sunnyside Elementary School are learning - and teaching - a lesson about the importance of digital citizenship and online safety through student-created presentations that address identity protection and cyber bullying. The goal is to foster a sense of ethics and responsibility among students when interacting in the digital world. Sunnyside is one of 45 schools to become district-wide digital citizenship certified.

Carver Elementary School is committed to healthy eating and physical activity as a way to support the development of lifelong healthy habits and improvement of academic outcomes. The school has partnered with Moms Against Poverty to kick off the MAP Frozen Food Project to provide students and families with another opportunity to receive equitable access to fresh, high quality foods regardless of their ability to pay. Superintendent Vincent Matthews and Board of Supervisors President Malia Cohen will address students and community members to discuss healthy food access and disparities in underserved communities

Malcolm X Academy will host Family Literacy Night to promote reading among students and families. Parents and caregivers will read aloud to their children to encourage a love of reading early in life and to teach important literacy skills. Guest author Joi Jackson, a former SFUSD teacher, will speak to students. Afterward students and families will visit literacy stations in the cafeteria. The school will also celebrate Dia de los Muertos through face painting, storytelling, and story writing
