Highlights Feb. 11-15, 2019: Jazz and Symphony strike a chord with students; Youth Summit and theater promote social justice; Students reflect on Lunar New Year
As part of Black History Month, students at Francisco Middle School will engage in a unique lesson in music and mindfulness during an SF Jazz concert, “The Aneesa Strings Trio Jazz & Mindfulness: How Creating and Listening to Improvisational Music Can Improve Socio-Emotional Intelligence.” The ensemble will demonstrate for students the different ways listening to instrumental music can improve the cognitive functions of the brain that lead to increased ability to focus, identify emotions, and build social and self-awareness. The performance is part of school curriculum created by SF Jazz.

Students at Ruth Asawa School of the Arts will have the opportunity to learn from San Francisco Symphony Principal Trombonist Timothy Higgins. The musician and trombone teacher will speak with students about his path to becoming a professional musician, while giving advice about how to achieve this goal. The trombonist will also work with students during their live rehearsal at the school.

It’s almost Valentine’s Day, and love will certainly be in the air at the multiple shows of “Once On This Island,” a first of its kind collaboration between Everett Middle School and Mission High School. The cast of 20 students from both schools will hold a dress rehearsal on the eve of opening night, which falls on Valentine’s Day. The show touches on issues of social justice and racism, which Musical Theater Teacher Jorell Chavez describes as, “not your average love story,” and reflects the issues his students encounter in San Francisco.

Over 600 students from SFUSD elementary, middle and high schools will meet for the 3rd Annual Youth Summit at June Jordan School for Equity, a high school for social justice. The event theme this year is “Love is Resistance,” and takes place on Valentine's Day. The Youth Summit provides space for students to participate in civic engagement; build relationships with other schools; and discuss broader topics that affect all youth. Students will lead discussions on topics including gentrification, food justice, Black feminism, cultural appropriation, hip hop, and activism. Community partners will offer workshops, internship/employment opportunities, and summer programs at the event.

Ulloa Elementary School students will celebrate Lunar New Year with special guest, California Senator Scott Wiener, who helped California enact a law that annually proclaims a specific date as Lunar New Year. The celebration of the Year of the Pig will include two student dance performances and one dance performance by adults. Students will also share reflections on Lunar New Year traditions.
