Security Projects

In October 2021, the District conducted a comprehensive security assessment, including secure door hardware, remote door access, and updates to the District’s standard for building communication system, or public address system (“PA System”), to cover circulation spaces and exterior areas to enable effective communication in case of an emergency. 

Bond Program staff has been coordinating with the district’s Emergency Preparedness team and school site leadership to scope and implement this work. In 2024, SFUSD leadership directed the Bond Program to address all PA Systems at K-12 school sites that did not meet District standards. The program also included early education sites in this work.

The Bond Program has allocated over $45 million for this work, and as of the 2026-27 school year we have completed all upgrades (with the exception of a few schools in the middle of modernizations, which include PA system upgrades as part of that renovation work).

Given the large number of schools that required these PA system updates, we grouped schools into implementation packages. Organizing the work into packages allowed the Program to design, bid, and implement construction on projects more efficiently. 

Additionally, in 2025-26 we completed all door hardware and locksets upgrades, as well as all remote door access upgrade projects.
