Gather required documents and create a list of at least 5 school choices.

2) Complete and Submit Your 2024-25 Application

We are currently in the Round 2 application period. Apply before the Round 2 deadline — April 19 — to give yourself the best possible chance of getting into a preferred school. Families will receive their Round 2 school assignments during the week of May 27.

Don't forget to include these required documents.

3) If needed, schedule a Language Assessment for your student.

Students in TK-8 who speak a language other than English and wish to enroll in a language program may need be assessed for their current language skills. An Enrollment Counselor may reach out to schedule a language assessment. Click here to learn more.

IMPORTANT: Ruth Asawa School of the Arts (SOTA) and Lowell High School have different application processes and deadlines:

  • The deadline to apply to Lowell High School for 9th grade for 2024-25 has passed.
  • New 9th grade applicants to SOTA will need to submit the Round 2 application and complete an audition with the school. Audition information will be shared at a future date on this webpage.

I applied for 2024-25 in the Main Round, on or before the February 2nd deadline. What’s next?

  • If you received your Main Round assignment letter, you were told either that your student was:
    • Automatically enrolled:
      • You do not need to accept assignment
      • SFUSD will automatically enroll in your assigned school
    • You need to accept or decline assignment:
      • The deadline to accept assignment passed on April 5, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. If you did not accept your assignment, your student was dropped. Please contact the Enrollment Center for help.
      • If you did accept, you can still decline the assignment before the first day of school on August 19, 2024.
  • If you wish to apply to a different school for 2024-25 than the school you were assigned to in the Main Round, you are able to submit a Round 2 application (online or paper) before the Round 2 application deadline of April 19:
    • If you apply for Round 2 and get a new school assignment, the Round 2 assignment will automatically replace your Main Round assignment.
    • See the Frequently Asked Questions about Round 2 below.

You can view instructions on how to decline assignment at sfusd.edu/mainround and get answers to your questions about your options in our Frequently Asked Questions section

SFUSD staff applying to the same school they currently work at

If you are a permanent, full-time site based district staff member who lives in San Francisco AND one of the schools you are applying to includes the same school that you currently work at, please write or enter your SFUSD ID on your application.

If you applied during the Main Round (Oct. 20, 2023 to Feb. 2, 2024) and did not receive an assignment to the school where you currently work and you wish to have your child attend school there, you can submit an appeal and be granted an approval. Information on how to file an appeal will be included in your assignment letter, which arrived during the week of March 18, 2024.

Questions about Round 2

In this section, you will find frequently asked questions regarding applying to Round 2.

Who can apply in Round 2?

Any family can apply for Round 2, regardless of whether they applied in the Main Round and regardless of whether they currently have a school assignment for next year.

If your student already has a school assignment for next year, from the Main Round or because they are a current student, you do not have to forfeit your school assignment in order to submit a Round 2 application.

However, by applying in Round 2, you may potentially lose that spot. You should only list schools on your Round 2 application that you prefer more than your current school; if you get into one of your requested schools, that school automatically replaces your previous assignment. If you don't get assigned to one of your request schools, you will keep your previous assignment.

If you have questions about this, call the Enrollment Center to speak with a counselor — 415-241-6085.

What schools are available in Round 2?

All schools except Lowell High School that have open seats after the Main Round are available to select in Round 2. However, there are generally fewer seats available in Round 2 than in the Main Round. That is why we strongly recommend that families who applied in the Main Round accept their Main Round school assignment: you may not get the school you want in Round 2.

IMPORTANT: Please note that if you apply for Round 2 and get a school assignment, your Main Round assignment will be automatically canceled. You should only list schools on your Round 2 application that you would prefer more than your Main Round assignment school.

If you decide that you prefer to keep your previous school assignment rather than your Round 2 choices, you will need to cancel your Round 2 application by Friday, May 3 at 4:30 p.m. PT.
