Tier 1 PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) in early education settings are universal strategies designed to promote positive behavior and prevent the occurrence of challenging behaviors for all children in the classroom. These tier-one supports focus on creating a positive and supportive learning environment where all children can thrive. Tier 1 behavior supports are how teach, acknowledge, and strengthen safe & engaged behaviors as well as how we respond to disengaged or unsafe behaviors using evidence-based practices. Tier 1 practices are used as the foundation in planning Tiers 2 and 3 supports & interventions.
Tier 2 PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) supports are interventions that are targeted at students who require more individualized or specialized assistance beyond what is provided at the universal (Tier 1) level but do not require intensive, individualized support (Tier 3). Tier 2 supports typically involve small-group interventions and are designed to prevent the development of more serious behavioral problems.
Tier 3 PBIS supports are implemented within a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) framework and are intended to provide intensive, individualized support to students with the most significant needs. They require careful planning, coordination, and ongoing evaluation to ensure that students receive the support they need to be successful.
