Nirupama “Niru” Jayaraman is a seasoned public finance and education leader with nearly 20 years of experience leading fiscal operations, strategic planning, and organizational change in large, complex public school systems. She serves as the Chief Financial Officer of the San Francisco Unified School District, providing financial leadership across the District and supporting strategic, sustainable, and student-centered resource decisions.

Prior to joining SFUSD, Niru spent 18 years in various financial leadership roles at the Los Angeles Unified School District, the second-largest school district in the United States. Most recently, she served as Director of Budget Services and Financial Planning, overseeing the development and management of LAUSD’s $18.8 billion budget and a team of 160 employees. She also led development of the District’s $1.6 billion Fiscal Stabilization Plan and advised the Superintendent and Board on fiscal policy, collective bargaining, compliance, and enrollment trends.

Earlier in her LAUSD career, Niru served as Assistant and Deputy Budget Director, overseeing $2.7 billion in budgets across Special Education, Early Childhood Education, and Student Health and Human Services. Her work included multi-year forecasting, scenario modeling, personnel budgeting, and strategic planning, and she served as a key fiscal advisor to cabinet leaders and the Board.

Before joining LAUSD, Niru was an elementary school teacher in Brooklyn and a policy analyst at the California Budget and Policy Center in Sacramento.

Niru holds a BA in American Literature with honors from UCLA and a master’s degree in public policy from the University of Chicago, where she received a full-tuition Dean’s Scholarship.
