Transitional Kindergarten
Dear Parent/Guardian:
We would like to let you know that thanks to a new California law, more 4 year olds are now eligible for Transitional Kindergarten (TK) for 2023-2024. Here is more information about TK:
What is Transitional Kindergarten (TK)?
TK is an extra year of school between preschool and kindergarten. For school year 2023-2024, it is for children who turn age 5 between September 2, 2023 and April 2, 2024.
Is Transitional Kindergarten (TK) mandatory?
No. It is up to parents to decide whether to enroll their children in preschool or transitional kindergarten.
Does Transitional Kindergarten (TK) cost money?
No. Children can attend TK for free because it is part of California’s K-12 public school system.
What schools have Transitional Kindergarten (TK)?
SFUSD has been able to add more TK programs to our schools because of the new law. See this list for the schools that have TK for 2023-2024.
