Deputy Superintendent of Educational Services

John L. Davis started as Deputy Superintendent of Educational Services in the San Francisco Unified School District in July, 2026. Before that, he spent the bulk of his educational career on the east coast. He was most recently the Chief of Schools of Baltimore City Public Schools from August 2017 to February 2024. 

Mr. Davis began his career as a middle school math teacher at West Baltimore Middle School in 1992 and later served as the founding principal of New Era Academy HS. He has also taught math and served as head of school at the Laikipia Baraka School in Nanyuki, Kenya. He rejoined Baltimore City Schools in 2017 after working in the District of Columbia Public Schools for 10 years, where he held positions including interim chancellor, chief of schools, high school instructional superintendent, and director of school leadership strategy. 

During this period, D.C. Public Schools grew in numerous key indicators, including the National Assessment of Educational Progress, high school graduation, attendance, and enrollment. He graduated from The Ohio State University with a bachelor’s degree in Engineering and has a master’s degree in Administration and Supervision from Johns Hopkins University.
