San Francisco (June 28, 2019) - At its last meeting of the school year, the San Francisco Board of Education voted unanimously for three resolutions related to equity and access in arts learning, new school funding allocations and wellness services.
The resolution “To Adopt the Declaration of the Rights of All Students to Equity and Access in Arts Learning” was co-authored by Commissioners Alison M. Collins and Gabriela Lopez, and calls for the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) to continue its commitment to dance, instrumental music, theatre, creative writing, chorus, visual, and media arts as an essential part of a comprehensive education to prepare all students for college, career, and life. The resolution “Providing SFUSD Schools the Means to Close the Opportunity Gap” was co-authored by Commissioners Gabriela Lopez and Faauuga Moliga, and Board Vice President Mark Sanchez. The Board’s “Opportunity Gap” resolution affirms the efforts of SFUSD to provide schools serving populations with unique needs the resources to close the opportunity gap, and directs staff to establish and expand additional resources such as adding more per pupil funding to certain schools with students residing in public housing, students with incarcerated parents/guardians, and students in foster care. The resolution “Our Healing in Our Hands - Creating Schools as Spaces of Student-Driven Healing, Transformation and Growth” was co-authored by Commissioners Jenny Lam, Alison M. Collins, and Faauuga Moliga. It directs staff to further increase funding to support culturally responsive health curriculum with preventative wellness services for students, including peer-led wellness programs.
