New School in Mission Bay Moves Forward
San Francisco (June 17, 2022) - The San Francisco Board of Education approved plans to build a new San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) school in Mission Bay, at a special meeting on Wednesday, June 15. The project has been envisioned for over two decades and has received vast support from the community and City.
The school will include a PK - 5 elementary school; a Linked Learning Hub for students enrolled in SFUSD high schools where they are offered unique opportunities to connect their learning with career experiences and workforce readiness; and a professional learning resource for teachers and staff to receive training in support of ever-changing methods of teaching and ways to engage students. The Mission Bay school is scheduled to open August 2025.
On Wednesday, the Board certified the Final Environmental Impact Report for the Mission Bay School Project and approved a resolution making state-required findings for new school site selection. The Board also approved the Design Build contract with McCarthy Building Company/DLR Architects for the detailed design, permitting, and construction of the Mission Bay school. Detail design will wrap at the end of this year, and construction is expected to begin by December 2023 once necessary permits are received. The Mission Bay school is being delivered by the 2016 Proposition A Bond program.
"The new Mission Bay School is a rare opportunity for SFUSD to design a 21st century school from the ground up. It further strengthens our commitment to each and every student in providing high quality education and ensures they succeed in the future," SF Board of Education President Jenny Lam said. "We are excited to have this new school in a diverse and thriving San Francisco neighborhood where we continue to see housing growth and community development."
The plan for Mission Bay School has been in the works since 1998, when the former San Francisco Redevelopment Agency (now the Office of Community Investment and Infrastructure) set aside a school parcel in the original Mission Bay Redevelopment Plan. That parcel is currently owned by UC San Francisco (UCSF), and will formally transfer to SFUSD later this year. Mission Bay, with over 6,000 units of new housing and hundreds of SFUSD students, is part of a major housing growth and population increase that San Francisco will continue to see on the eastern side of the City over the next decade.
