Over 7,000 SFUSD Staff Report Being Fully Vaccinated

San Francisco (September 2, 2021) - San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) Superintendent Dr. Vincent Matthews announced that of the 7,584 employees who reported their COVID-19 vaccination status by the August 31 deadline, 96% are fully vaccinated.

Starting Sept. 7, all SFUSD employees will be required to be fully vaccinated. Any employee who is not yet vaccinated will be mandated to test for COVID-19 at least weekly. SFUSD has nearly 10,000 employees including as-needed, substitutes, part-time and full-time workers and has heard back from 7,584 employees after reaching out through email, texts and phone calls. SFUSD is now following up with all staff who have not yet responded.

As of Sept. 2, there are 7,270 staff who have confirmed they are fully vaccinated and 236 staff who reported not being vaccinated. An additional 17 staff said they have an appointment to be vaccinated, and 61 said they are partially vaccinated.

“It’s extremely encouraging to see such high rates of vaccination among our staff,” said Superintendent Dr. Vincent Matthews. "Our vaccine requirement is one of the many ways we are keeping our students, staff and families safe. Vaccines remain extremely effective -- vaccinated people are much less likely to get severe symptoms that result in hospitalization or death from COVID.”

“We are doing everything in our power to keep our community safe and keep school buildings open for learning and connection,” said SF Board of Education President Gabriela López. “San Francisco as a whole has one of the highest vaccination rates, and I’m pleased that includes our public school district staff and students who are eligible to be vaccinated.”

The district has heavily promoted vaccination opportunities with staff, students and families since the vaccine became available, including partnering with various pharmacies and the SFDPH to host school-based vaccination clinics. The City’s dashboard shows that an estimated 90% of all 12-17 year olds in San Francisco are vaccinated.

All staff and students have access to free COVID testing through SFUSD and those staff who are unvaccinated will be required to test weekly.
