Saving Water & Touring Schools - Highlights for January 6-12, 2015

Highlights

This fall the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) calculated how much water large organizations were using on average for landscaping and other needs and asked them to reduce usage by 10 percent. In November, the first month of the program, SFUSD reduced water use by 43 percent.  To achieve this, SFUSD landscaping staff fixed leaks in watering systems, shortened plant watering times and prioritized work orders for plumbing. Under the guidance of the school district’s sustainability department, SFUSD staff and students have made great strides over the last several years in reducing energy and water use.

The deadline to apply to SFUSD schools is fast approaching, and families are going on school tours. At Daniel Webster Elementary, which offers a Spanish Immersion program as well as general education, two tours have been added this month to accommodate rising interest in the school. The tour includes a chance to meet current school parents, a look at some classrooms in action, and a Q&A session with Principal Moraima Machado. Applications for the 2015-16 school year are due Friday, January 16, and the school district’s choice-based system means families have the opportunity to choose which public schools they would like their children to attend. Taking time to find several schools they like – and applying on time – increases the likelihood they will get one of their top choice schools.

When:    Thursday, January 8 / 9:00 – 9:45 a.m.
Where:   Daniel Webster ES (school tour) / 465 Missouri St.
