Techies in the Classroom & Geezers on the Court - Highlights for January 27- Feb 2, 2015

Several tech professionals have been starting their days in SFUSD classrooms as volunteers, helping SFUSD computer science teachers prepare students for future tech careers. It’s going so well that SFUSD is aiming to grow the number of volunteers, with the hope of giving computer science classes volunteers on a daily basis. This week a TEALS (Technology Education And Literacy in Schools) volunteer will be working with students learning fundamental programming concepts using JavaScript, an industry-standard web programming language.

When:   Friday, January 30 / 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.

Where:  Lincoln HS / 2162 24th Ave.

It’ll be old-school skills versus youthful brawn at the 45th annual Alumni vs. Varsity Basketball game at Balboa High. Each year, former members of the Balboa boys’ varsity team from as far back as the 1970’s play against current varsity team players for a good-natured matchup to raise funds for Balboa’s sports programs. The event is sponsored by the Balboa Alumni Association, which has approximately 8,000 members and works to maintain old traditions and create new ones to enrich the lives of everyone connected with Balboa High.

When:   Saturday, January 31 / gates open at 5:00 p.m.

Where:  Balboa HS / 1000 Cayuga Ave.

There are 650 volunteer mentors who also happen to be SFUSD staff putting in extra time to mentor young students. Kathy Babcock is a school district nurse who took one student under her wing at a few years back. Now, as her mentor, she meets with her mentee every week, attends her school activities, and maintains a relationship with the student's family to help them sort out whatever is needed for her mentee’s education. Mentors are making a difference—45 percent of middle and high school mentees improved their grade point average, and 46 percent of elementary school mentees improved their school attendance.

Call for details.
