Biking to School & Translating for Parents - Highlights for April 21-27, 2015

To celebrate Earth Week, thousands of SFUSD students and families will be biking to school on Tuesday. Students at Commodore Sloat Elementary, who have also been beefing up pedestrian safety with a new student crossing guard program, will host a special event after the ride to school. The week is presented by the SF Safe Routes to School partnership to highlight healthy and environmentally friendly ways to travel to school. More than 75 schools across the city have signed up to participate in Bike & Roll to School Week.

When:    Tuesday, April 21

8:10 a.m. / Bike train of students and parents will depart from the sundial on Entrada Court in Ingleside Terrace and ride to Commodore Sloat ES.8:30 a.m. / Event begins in the schoolyard

SFUSD just set a record-high budget for its Public Education Enrichment Fund (PEEF), and there are lots of people who are already benefitting from the fund, including parents. The SFUSD Translation and Interpretation Unit will be expanding its services to parents to provide, among other things, free simultaneous interpretation in Chinese, Spanish and other languages at parent-teacher conferences, meetings and community events. For example, at Galileo High School’s PTA meeting this week, four SFUSD interpreters will be on hand to ensure that parents from various language backgrounds are able to participate.

Approximately 500 fourth graders from around SFUSD will be joined by Superintendent Carranza for the second annual 5K Fun Run. The run exposes students to low-cost, sustainable fitness habits that can last a lifetime. It also improves cardiovascular endurance and prepares students for the fitness testing they take in fifth grade.
