Big data, ballgames & a kick-off read-in: Highlights for Jan. 26 - Feb. 1, 2016
With all the variables that go into making schools great for every child, there is a lot of data to look at. That’s where a new plan required by the State of California called the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) comes in. The LCAP is where SFUSD identifies its annual priorities for student success, puts them into action, and then measures its progress. That information is used to update the next year’s plan. The LCAP reflects the input gathered through many conversations with parents and educators, as well as research about ways to address our most pressing challenges. SFUSD will be presenting “Telling the Story Behind the Numbers: Making Sense of District Data” this week to the public.

The Balboa basketball team will be taking on some old-school alumni at the 46th annual Alumni vs. Varsity game at Balboa High. Each year, former members of the Balboa boys’ varsity team from as far back as the 1970s play against current varsity team players for a good-natured matchup to raise funds for Balboa’s sports programs. The event is sponsored by the Balboa Alumni Association, which has approximately 8,000 members and works to maintain old traditions and create new ones that enrich the lives of everyone connected with Balboa High.

To celebrate black contributions to literature and promote a love for reading, Board of Education Commissioner Shamann Walton, Director of HOPE SF Theodore Miller, and Special Assistant to the Superintendent Landon Dickey will join a host of African-American male readers at Carver Elementary School. Along with Superintendent Richard Carranza, they will each read aloud a book by a black author or illustrator in elementary school classrooms across San Francisco. This is event is supported by the SF Ed Fund, the San Francisco Alliance of Black School Educators, Tzu Chi Foundation, National Sorority Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. (Beta Nu Chapter), and the Bayview YMCA.
