Highlights Oct. 1-5, 2018: Dreamforce winners, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass student performers, anti-bullying education

Highlights

Dreamforce, one of the world’s largest software and technology conferences of the year, welcomed over 170,000+ innovators including students from Lawton Alternative School last week. The students participated in the Kids Coding Maker Faire and won first place in the Sustainable Cities of the Future challenge by designing and building a fog catcher. The students competed against five teams comprised of students from around the Bay Area. The goal of the competition is to support students in understanding they can influence change in their community via hands-on activities by utilizing 3D printing, coding and electronics.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. SFUSD aims to prevent bullying by creating inclusive learning environments through health education curriculum, a social-emotional learning framework and support services that build supportive and inclusive schools in and out of the classroom. A number of events and programs scheduled this month and throughout the school year address bullying prevention and resources for students, including Be An Ally and Stand Up for Peace training, Project SECURE programming, and Day of Silence.

An impressive lineup of musicians are set to perform at this year’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, including the Marina Middle School choir and Lawton Alternative School’s ukulele ensemble. The young musicians will perform three songs led by their teachers Winona Hendrick and John Mansfield, who perform as ukulele duet, The Letterboxers.
