Highlights April 22-27, 2019: Earth Day promotes sustainability, Middle school commemorates 86th anniversary, Annual arts festival celebrates student creativity
Dianne Feinstein Elementary School students are no strangers to sustainable activities, but they will get a special reminder on Earth Day about proper sorting, reducing and reusing with a lesson from the San Francisco Department of the Environment. Students will also get a visit from a mural-wrapped Recology collection truck to see firsthand how they can make a positive difference every day by reducing, reusing, recycling and composting. SFUSD is committed to fostering a culture of sustainability in order to provide students and staff with a healthy, safe and comfortable learning environment while saving money and resources, and protecting the natural world.

Current and incoming students, alumni, families and community members will gather at James Lick Middle School for an anniversary celebration titled, "Nuestra Comunidad, Nuestra Escuela: Celebrating Over 86 Years of Diversity at JLMS." The day will include a talent showcase of current students and staff and alumni as well as an unveiling of an outdoor 85-tile installation featuring student-created, ceramic tiles. The tiles will represent each year the school has been open and a local or world event that happened in that year. District 8 Supervisor Rafael Mandelman will present a certificate of honor to long-time teacher and coach, Ray Ponce for the school’s gym dedication naming ceremony in honor of Ponce.

The 34th annual SFUSD Arts Festival is a week-long celebration of student creativity in visual, literary, media, and performing arts. The Visual and Performing Arts(VAPA) program-hosted event will welcome families, teachers, artists and community members from San Francisco and beyond to experience more than 90 student and community choral groups, orchestras, drama and dance ensembles, jazz bands and concert bands from across the district. The goal of the VAPA program is to provide access and equity in arts education for every SFUSD student, at every school, during each curricular day. The annual event is a city-wide celebration of student creativity.
