Press Release
San Francisco (October 2, 2025) - The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) announced today that Mission Bay Elementary School will open in August 2026, providing new neighborhood school capacity in one of the city’s fastest-growing areas.
Mission Bay School is the product of more than two decades of planning, community input, and collaboration across multiple city agencies in service of bringing more opportunities to SFUSD families. The new school is integral to rapid housing development plans along San Francisco’s east side where families now residing in SoMa, Mission Bay, and Potrero Hill face some of the steepest competition in the city for seats intended for neighborhood residents. The construction of Mission Bay Elementary was made possible by Proposition A, passed by voters in 2016, and a Board of Education Resolution that initiated the planning process.
“Mission Bay Elementary represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to align our growing communities with high-quality neighborhood schools,” said SFUSD Superintendent Dr. Maria Su. “This plan delivers on a longstanding promise to ensure we are building schools where families live.”
Mission Bay Elementary Opening Plan
Mission Bay Elementary School is located within the Daniel Webster Attendance Area, the most populous and rapidly growing attendance area in SFUSD. Construction is scheduled to be completed by January 2026, and the school will welcome its first students in August 2026. In its opening year, the school will offer General Education Pre-K, General Education Transitional Kindergarten, General Education Kindergarten, and combined TK–Kindergarten Special Education. Mission Bay Elementary is planned to grow into a full TK–5 school with Preschool by 2032.
What Families Should Know
- Families can apply to Preschool TK or Kindergarten at Mission Bay in the 2026-27 enrollment cycle; the Main Round application opens on October 17, 2025 at sfusd.edu/apply.
- Mission Bay Elementary School will become an Attendance Area school, sharing the Daniel Webster Attendance Area.
- Mission Bay Elementary opening will provide more TK General Education seats in 2026-27 for San Francisco families overall.
- All students in the attendance area will qualify for the attendance area tiebreaker at Daniel Webster and the new Mission Bay Elementary School.
- The neighborhood overall will see a threefold increase in General Education seats with minimal impact on other schools. There will be more school capacity overall in the neighborhood, and more General Education attendance area seats.
Next Steps
In the 2025-26 school year, SFUSD will launch a new Mission Bay Elementary School website and host a table for the new school at the Enrollment Fair on Saturday, Oct. 18. Tours of the campus will begin in spring 2026.
These changes will expand choice, increase capacity, and strengthen neighborhood access to schools for San Francisco families
