For the first time ever in SFUSD--and perhaps in the nation--all SFUSD elementary school libraries will have a set of books and curriculum that focuses on how to graduate from high school ready for college. Called Roadmap to College, it teaches topics such as financial literacy, goal setting, problem solving, study skills, and career exploration at a level young children can understand. City Treasurer Jose Cisneros will read Betty Bunny Wants Everything, a book that introduces the concepts of financial literacy and the difference between wants and needs. City Treasurer Cisneros’ office created Kindergarten to College (K2C) in 2012 in partnership with SFUSD. K2C automatically opens savings accounts for SFUSD kindergartners with seed money and encourages families to contribute. Research shows that a student with a college savings account is over six times more likely to attend college than one without such an account, regardless of the amount in the account.

When: Thursday, Oct. 13 / 12:00-12:45 p.m.

Where: Buena Vista Horace Mann / 3351 23rd St.

School kids will be grabbing their buckets and shovels this Saturday to compete in the annual Leap sandcastle competition. Hosted by Leap Arts in Education, this spirited competition between teams of architects, designers, contractors, corporations, engineers, and local elementary school students happens each October. Before the event, teams meet with students in the classroom to develop ideas based on a set theme. Plans are finalized, clay models are shaped, all in preparation for the big day. Creating these works with a diverse team provides a learning experience for both the students and the many sponsors who participate. This year’s theme is "Makers & Movers: The people & things that move us."

When: Saturday, Oct. 15 / 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Where: Ocean Beach at Balboa St.
