On-the-spot college admissions & the greening of education: Highlights for September 15-21, 2015

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson will be visiting Lincoln High to share the California Department of Education’s Blueprint for Environmental Literacy, which promotes environmental literacy for all students in California. Juniors enrolled in Lincoln’s Green Engineering course will be inviting Torlakson, Assembly Member David Chiu and Superintendent Richard Carranza to join them in building a rain water catchment system for the school garden. These students, along with the hundreds of students enrolled in the school’s Green Academy, discover and implement new solutions to environmental issues in a hands-on college preparatory program.

When: Tuesday, Sept. 15 / 1:30-2:30 p.m.
Where: Lincoln HS / 2162 24th Ave.

Tenor Michael Fabiano, currently the male lead in “Luisa Miler” at the San Francisco Opera, will be sharing his artistic and real life journey, a fascinating story. (Hint: Fabiano is also a licensed baseball umpire.) Fabiano’s visit provides an opportunity for middle school students who are studying the performing arts to interact directly with an internationally renowned artist and learn from his motto, “Rigor is my life.”

When: Friday, September 18 / 2:00- 3:00 p.m.
Where: James Lick Middle School / 1220 Noe St.

Hundreds of SFUSD’s African American high school seniors will be interviewing for college spots at 32 historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) this Saturday, and some will receive offers and scholarships on the spot. Last year, more than 150 students were offered college placements at the event, and well over $100,000 in scholarships were awarded. The Black Family Cradle to College and Career Day Resource Fair will also bring dozens of other resources for families to help connect them to support and enrichment.

When: Saturday, September 19 / 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. (event takes place 9:30 to 3:00)
Where: Mission HS / 3750 18th St.
