Bootcamp, bees & basketball: Highlights for April 11-17, 2017
Two students at John O'Connell High are taking community wellness into their own hands by offering a Fitness Boot Camp for the neighborhood. The students, a 12th-grader and a 10th-grader, are trained as wellness coaches and teach participants how to live healthy without going to a gym by using body-based workouts. The students also started the boot camp to fundraise for donations to fix equipment in the school's fitness lab. So far, the class is attracting neighbors, teachers and other students—and there's still room for participants to join.

The fight to save bees has one more ally—Visitacion Valley Middle School students. The school has been abuzz about the community's newest addition since the Bay Area nonprofit Planet Bee Foundation recently installed two hives to the school's roof. Through the partnership, students will study the life cycle of bees and tackle project-based learning associated with bees.

The celebrations continue as Mayor Lee honors the Mission High Bears basketball team for their historic win. The team is the first San Francisco public school to win a state title and is now considered to be the best team in the Metro area, according the the San Francisco Chronicle. Mayor Lee and others will be on hand to officially congratulate the coach and players for their phenomenal season. The players and coach will be available for interviews.

The San Francisco Public Library has teamed up with SFUSD to provide every SFUSD student with a public library card, called the Scholar Card. This amped-up card is simple to apply for and connects students to millions of free resources, including online homework help, language learning tools, streaming media, and even museum passes. This card comes to students with a clean slate—all late fees they might have from previous cards will be waived. SFUSD librarians also have their own special SFPL card giving them access to vast resources. Students at Tenderloin Elementary will be the first to get their new cards.
