Lowriders & golf swings: Highlights for May 5-9, 2017
Please do call it ‘FRISCO,’ say students who created the event acronym for Friday Is Successful College Opportunities for the day that soon-to-be SFUSD graduates descend upon the City College of San Francisco Ocean Campus to explore the College Resource Fair & Career Expo and even enroll in City College classes. With increasing high school graduation rates and an economy that demands a more skilled workforce, FRISCO Day shows students the importance of attending and completing higher education by offering them a clear path to these next steps. As Mayor Ed Lee says, “Thanks to FRISCO Day, students are gaining confidence and hope by learning about their options and how to reach their highest potential. San Francisco is counting on our city’s youth to become our next generation of innovators and leaders, and the city is committed to helping them succeed.”

The “Give Something Back Car Show” at John O’Connell High is returning for its fourth year. The school is partnering with the San Francisco LowRider Council for the school fundraiser, which supports afterschool programs and other student activities. Students say it’s an opportunity to celebrate Latino culture during Cinco de Mayo weekend and for the community to learn about their school. Students will help the LowRider Council judge the event. More than 100 classic cars, pedal cars, bicycles, and motorcycles will vie for trophies in categories such as best paint job, best details and best overall.

Approximately 2,000 SFUSD fifth graders have been getting golf lessons via ParTee at Harding Park Golf Course. Students are taught a golf and life skills curriculum as part of elementary school physical education classes. Golf is considered a lifelong physical activity that stimulates brain activity and promotes heart health, and physical education in elementary schools plays a dual role in serving the mind and the body. Now it’s time for kids to show off their new skills with the 8th annual Par Tee celebration. Joining them will be SFUSD Deputy Superintendent Guadalupe Guerrero, PG&E Vice-President Nick Bijuir, Master of Ceremony Kay Cockerill from the National Golf Channel, SFUSD PE teachers, elementary classroom teachers, parents, and the First Tee staff.
