SF Board of Education Votes to Approve Collective Bargaining Agreement Between SFUSD, UESF

San Francisco (March 1, 2022) - The San Francisco Board of Education voted tonight to approve a new collective bargaining agreement between the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) and the United Educators of San Francisco (UESF). The new agreement expires June 30, 2023 and replaces the collective bargaining agreement that expired June 30, 2020. 

The agreement creates recruitment and retention incentives for educators and will help stabilize staffing at SFUSD. Per the agreement, UESF teachers and paraeducators will receive two one-time bonuses of $2,000; one in June of 2022 and one in November of 2022. In addition, daily rates for substitute teachers and paraeducators will increase substantially to promote higher rates of classroom coverage.

Sabbaticals will be suspended for the 2022-2023 school year and will be limited during the 2023-2024 school year to help reduce the number of teacher vacancies. Finally, the additional preparation period given to high school teachers who teach Advanced Placement (AP) courses will be suspended during the 2022-2023 school year. This will not impact the number of AP courses offered by SFUSD and teachers who teach AP classes will still have a prep period. Financial savings created by suspending sabbaticals and the additional prep for AP will help pay for the agreement. 

The agreement also includes changes that comply with statutory requirements around mandated child abuse reporter training and the probationary period for new paraeducators, and allows either party to reopen the contract on or after July 1, 2022.
