Press Release Message
San Francisco (February 7, 2026) - San Francisco Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Maria Su released the following statement on Saturday night:
“I am deeply frustrated and disheartened that we did not reach a tentative agreement with United Educators of San Francisco (UESF) tonight. The SFUSD bargaining team continued to provide additional creative solutions that directly respond to UESF’s stated priorities, and is based on the recent neutral fact-finding report. I am encouraged by our shared commitment to support immigrant students and families, which led us to a tentative agreement on sanctuary district policies. We remain ready to work on reaching a full agreement with UESF. My team is prepared to return to the bargaining table tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 8, and negotiate for as long as it takes.”
Superintendent Su and her district bargaining team met with UESF on Saturday at 2:00 pm to try to reach an agreement. UESF provided a counter-proposal at the session, and SFUSD offered a comprehensive package as a response. The package included provisions that met UESF’s request for a two-year term and included a salary increase that is equivalent to 6% over two years and a health benefits allowance of $24,000/year.
The district proposed to implement UESF’s proposal of a workload model for special education as a pilot program at five school sites through June 30, 2028. Additionally, the district accepted UESF’s proposal on housing, sanctuary policies and regulation of artificial intelligence.
SFUSD and UESF came to a tentative agreement on sanctuary policy. While this represents considerable progress, UESF ended negotiations at 9:45 pm. The district encouraged UESF to stay and invited them back to the table tomorrow Feb. 8, 2026.
SFUSD has received UESF’s notice of intent to strike on Monday, Feb. 9. All SFUSD schools will be closed to students on Monday due to the strike.
SFUSD and UESF have been engaged in negotiations since March 2025. While SFUSD deeply values its educators, the district is also grappling with a dire fiscal reality. Learn more about SFUSD’s budget situation.
