Student Nutrition Services Hub + Shops

A key project of the 2024 Bond, the SNS Hub + Shops is a partnership with Student Nutrition Services and Buildings & Grounds. It builds on SFUSD's vision to address food security and provide healthier, more nutritious options for students. The new approximately 215,000-square-foot facility at 801 Toland will bring together the Central Kitchen, Buildings & Grounds shops, shared fleet parking, and a classroom in a purpose-built food service and shops complex. 

SFUSD is the largest provider of food security for children in San Francisco, and the largest food service operator in the Bay Area. SFUSD's Student Nutrition Services Department serves about 40,000 meals per day. Nearly two-thirds of students rely on school food for most of their daily nutrition. 

Design, permitting, and bidding are underway through the end of 2026, with construction at 801 Toland scheduled to begin in February 2027 and continue through July 2029. This schedule positions the District to begin moving into the facility and launching operations in 2029–30, followed by a phased transition of schools from the outside meal provider to the Central Kitchen beginning in the facility’s first year of operation.

The scale of the potential impact is substantial. Once operational, the Central Kitchen will support a system reaching 95 schools and progressively reduce SFUSD's reliance on third-party meal production. The transition plan already anticipates hiring and training staff, developing recipes and standard operating procedures, identifying vendors and farmers, establishing transportation routes, and gradually moving schools from the outside vendor to District production.

Student Nutrition Services has been working with the Chef Ann Foundation on Operational Planning and Implementation Plans. The reports below provide more details on the operational changes needed to transition to a central production facility for SNS. Some of the dates and phases named in these reports will change as we update construction schedules.
