Family Participation Guidelines & Responsibilities

We’re excited to have you join us as a volunteer, when possible, and want to ensure your experience is enjoyable and meaningful. To help maintain a safe and welcoming environment, we ask that you follow these guidelines:

  • Consume food and beverages (e.g., water, tea, coffee, or juice) only in designated areas. Alcohol is not allowed on school grounds.
  • Use cell phones or other electronic devices only in emergencies, to maintain focus during your time with students.
  • Refrain from smoking at all times on or near school property.
  • Provide documentation of a current TB test and/or chest x-ray clearance before beginning your volunteer activities.
  • Adhere to SB-792*, which mandates that all volunteers and staff be immunized against pertussis (whooping cough) and influenza, as required.

* SB792  California Code, Health and Safety Code - HSC § 1596.7995 State law SB 792--effective September 1, 2016 day care centers and preschools are required to maintain vaccination records for influenza, pertussis, measles and TB for their employees and "volunteers" working with the children. Community Care Licensing has clarified that any parent interacting or engaging with their child or another child in a preschool classroom is considered to be a "volunteer." Therefore, any parents who wish to enter a preschool classroom will be required to provide documentation of influenza, pertussis, measles and TB. Parents will not be required to provide immunization documentation if they drop-off and pick-up their children.

Family Support & Resources

At SFUSD, we are committed to supporting families in fostering student success, health, and well-being. Every school has dedicated staff who are here to assist with family engagement, children's development, safety, and academic growth.

In our preschool classrooms, mental health consultants from community-based agencies are available to support children by observing, consulting with staff and families, and helping access community resources when needed.

If your child is in a preschool program located at an elementary school, the school social worker assigned to your site is a great resource for support and questions. Elementary schools also have additional team members, such as family liaisons and school nurses, who can assist you.

The EED has a small team of family support specialists who can guide you in accessing programs within SFUSD and connecting with resources in the wider community.

Some of the resources school social workers and family support specialists can help with include:

Medical and Dental Insurance

Transportation

Housing and Utilities Assistance

Food and Shelter Assistance

Legal Assistance

Child Assessment and SPED Referrals

Substance Abuse Treatment

Health Services for Adults and Children

Mental Health Services

Out-of-School Time Before and After Care

SFUSD TK-12 Enrollment

Family Resource Centers
