As we celebrate opening day for SFUSD, I want to commend everyone who worked tirelessly to ensure our students have a teacher in every classroom.

The San Francisco Board of Education voted unanimously today to amend SFUSD’s graduation requirements, a decision that immediately grants diplomas to 107 SFUSD students who received a Certificate of Completion in May 2015 instead of a diploma solely because they had not passed both sections of the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE).

Ms. Rosario Anaya led the way for so many women and Latin Americans here in San Francisco, providing not only excellent leadership, but also serving as a role model as the first Latina elected to public office in San Francisco. Her work in service to our community was extensive and touched many lives.

Our hearts are with Ed Cavanaugh’s family and all those who knew and loved him. Our community has experienced a devastating loss.

The graduation rate for San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) has been adjusted to 83.9 percent, which is up from 81.7 percent the prior year.
