Assessment Administration - CAA

About the Assessment

The summative California Alternate Assessments (CAAs) for English language arts/literacy (ELA), mathematics, and science are administered to eligible students using the secure browser and test delivery system. The CAAs are for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities and whose individualized education program (IEP) team has designated the use of an alternate assessment on statewide summative assessments.

Online training modules for administering ELA, Math and Science assessments must be completed prior to administering CAA: 2023–24 CAA Test Examiner Tutorials. After finishing the Moodle training, a certificate will be generated to confirm training has been completed (Case Managers administering CAA Science complete an additional section for the science assessment).

Student Participation in California Alternate Assessments and ELPAC

  • Students cannot be exempted from CAASPP testing through an IEP process. Once identified for any alternate assessment, he/she must then take the alternate assessment version of every standardized state assessment: CAA ELA/Math, CAA Science and the Alternate ELPAC.
  • Alternate assessments must be listed in the current year IEP. Students are only able to access an assessment if alternate assessments are specified on the statewide assessments page of SEIS..

An IEP team decision worksheet and participation criteria can be used for selecting alternative state assessments.
