Wallenberg High School 2017-2018 Innovation Awards

The Design Challenge

How might we increase cultural sensitivity and responsiveness among students and staff in order to foster a school culture that embraces African American students as leaders and scholars on campus?

Wallenberg’s African American students reported feeling unsupported both by staff and their fellow students. African American students were suspended at a higher rate than others. SBAC ELA and Math scores further demonstrate the on-going opportunity/achievement gap. SEL survey scores also indicate a lack of belonging, and student leaders of their BSU gave specific examples of how their work was not lifted up by Wallenberg staff and other students. The school is figuring out how to ensure that African American students’ experience at Wallenberg is one where they feel welcomed, supported and uplifted.
